What did Townsend do wrong there?
He ran out towards the wing, away from every option of passing the ball. Then he had to recover with a backtrack and very risky pass.
I have some hope for Townsend though.

It's a good move for us. Too often last seasons we had players out on loan that didn't play enough.
Rose has been reckless but at least he is playing the tactics correctly. I don't think Townsend understands where he's supposed to be or what he's supposed to be doing. Maybe he should read that article?
In fairness though the middle was packed with players and by going wide he took two men with him, leaving more space in the middle.

Agreed. It's one thing that he dribbles to nowhere, but at least press high. If one guy doesn't press, it makes everyone else's hustle useless.
You can't do it that way though. You have to play where you have passing options. What he did just slows play down loads.

Lamela is on another level. So silky on the ball absolutely bossing it. This is the player we thought we were getting.
Holtby and Townsend both work so hard. I just wish they were... Better. Holtby had a great nick for the goal but he's been wasteful since.
Walker is on my side and he's really out of shape presumably from his injury. Not getting forward like he normally does and lots of hands on hips.
Really impressive with Veljkovic, has such nice touch. Not sure he'll stick at CB but he could be a great midfield as well. Looks a natural.
Mason and Capoue very solid in the center.
