Player Conor Gallagher

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

He’ll be ok. That’s all he ever was, even when he was key under Poch. He was Chelsea’s Ryan Mason there.

A better version but he is mostly effort and has a very basic footballing skill set. I’m honestly not sure how the club is expected to progress when targeting players like him.
To me he is in the same realm as the Johnson, Solanke, Richarlison signings which have hardly been roaring successes.

I'm not sure why our scouting team is so allergic to technical players.

Early days; but we're getting what we paid for: A workhorse who offers frustratingly little on the ball.

Both Porro, with the way he rushes towards Gallagher asking for the ball, and Odobert, with the way he starts adjusting his body along the touchline for a forward run, give the impression that they sense the kind of play that's developing : A simple triangle.

Can't say the same for Gallagher unfortunately.

I can brush something like this aside as a sign of rust; no big deal.

But the rest indicate a player to whom some of the fundamentals of ball progression and possession play don't come naturally: Awareness of the surroundings, quick manoeuvres with the ball, simple one twos / triangles.

And when the player in question is 26 in two weeks already, you can't help but feel that that's who he is, and always will be.

It's imperative that he gets paired with a really good passer&dribbler for the next season; I would actually prefer getting two technically sound central midfielders capable of sending him to the bench, but I'm trying to be realistic here.

There's a lot of footage of him at Chelsea moving the ball around at pace, looking for touch-and-go's, etc. Its entirely plausible he looks shit for us because, well, we're shit.

What these all show me, is that he's not good at turning with the ball.
there were definitely points in that game where he looked to attack. He isn't another Harry Winks, looking for the % pass to the CB all match every match.
But from these images, it's clear he isn't a Dembele-esq press resistant beast either.

He used to drop a shoulder, spin 180 and immediately opened the entire pitch up.
It's been 8 fucking years since we lost this.
Nobody has come close to filling that void.
I'd argue he's harder to replace than Kane or Son.

Ive said it about probably all our players at this point (except Vicario :maddisonhmm:) but I think its just wrong to judge any of them conclusively while Frank is in charge

Most teams have a system of play that lends them to playing football, getting the best of their players, creating a creative/quality environment....

...when players in these teams look bad, theyre probably bad

Us? We dont even want to play football. We dont want to use at least 30% of the pitch, we dont want possession, we dont want to play forward. All we do is run, try to do it solo, and press.

Impossible for any player to really look good in this side. Very easy to look bad though....

I think he's actually really good at doing just that. Not Dembele-level, no, but he can certainly receive and turn and move it forward for sure.

Get a manager in who knows how to use him and you'll see a different player. Right now he must be as confused as fuck.

Probably the most underrated player we had.
Biased as I am, I think he was the best box-to-box midfielder in Europe for at time .

He's just an engine in the middle with above average technical ability. Needless signing given we have plenty of his profile, and shouldn't be thought of as anything more than rotation player.

I agree 100%. My "we're shit" statement was a description of HOW we play, not individual players. They are almost all internationally capped footballers, they just appear to be absolute toilet in this system.

I hope he is, just not seen it yet.
What I will say, in the 2 games he's played, Spam and Burnley, we've controlled possession a lot better than many other games.
61% Vs WHU and 21 shots.
62% Vs Burnley and 18 shots.
48% Vs Sunderland and 13 shots.
I have found, quite a lot this season, that we often fuck up the easier passes. If 1 of our 11 is less prone to it, then that's technically an improvement.

West Ham and Burnley are 17th and 20th in possession so far this season, respectively.

They don't want the ball.

Hes not that player. That footage you have from him doing that at Chelsea must be cherry picking. I've watched loads of him in full games over the years. He has a brilliant engine, unreal pressing and workrate. Meant to be a top character and leader too. But he's extremely limited on the ball. He hasn't a bad shot on him and can score a few goals but he's never been a 1 touch midfielder. That footage you've seen must be total propaganda.

If you want a player comparison then I'd say he's very similar to Jordan Henderson and what he did for England and Liverpool. Type of player and character we need but extremely limited and would need to be carried by far more technical players.

This isn't recency bias. Found it quite strange how fans have been underwhelmed by him so far. I said the exact same comments when we signed him. I knew he'd struggle on the ball against teams who sit against us. We'll see the best of Gallagher in games where we haven't got the ball as his best traits are pressing and workrate. Similar to Palhinha but not sure if they can coexist in the same midfield as we'd be totally limited then. But I'd imagine we'll see an uptick In Gallagher's performances in the tougher games coming up

He is one of the best pressing players in the premier league, similar to Henderson at Liverpool. But we don’t really press so it’s not a match. He was great for Pochettino, Chavs second best player after Palmer so he would be immediately useful if we got Poch back.

1 we are shit

2 his skillset comes alive in attack and chaos. He is perfect for Poch or Klopp but he is a poor match for a team that sits deep like us. He is weakest in deep position as he is very conservative on the ball, however he is quite creative around the box weirdly. It’s a bit like using Declan Rice as a 6, his passing range isn’t suited to it he is a ball winning 8.

Again I agree - hes not that ultra-creative player initiating touch and go's or anything like that, sparking moves out of nothing - but he perfectly capable of being part of those moves.
