Don't get me wrong, I'd take him for a decent price as better than Sanchez for sure. However, we need a more dominate and reliable CB which he is not. Can be too flash, weak, and is error and injury prone. Hence good but not brilliant.
I'm not just talking about him as a defender, but technically as well. A change from City would do his career a world of good tbh.
Too flash is just his confidence on the ball. His passing range would make a tremendous impact IMO.
Stones, imo, has always thought he is better than he he actually is.
Dawdles on the ball at the back because he's a "ball playing CB", allowing the forwards to close him down, then plays it sideways to his CB partner. Problem is the other CB has also been closed down because Stones has taken 10 mins to decide to play it square.

Better than no one
The biggest issue our backline has right now is that Dier is considered the #1 CB option. So unless we bring in two new guys we are always going to be crap at the back because Dier will just be paired with the new guy and I doubt the new guy is going to be able to play at a top level and carry Dier as well.
The easiest improvement to our backline would be to drop Dier and go with Toby and Sanchez. It wouldn't be ideal but it would be a massive upgrade on playing Dier every game.
As long as Dier is picked as a CB we will continue to have a poor backline defensively.

Have you watched Dier in the league lately fella? Been quality. We've only conceded 5 goals in the league and 3 were penalties and 2 of those were travestys.
