Player Djed Spence

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I was one of them. It was ridiculous even without the benefit of hindsight, made worse by the pile up of injuries.
Djed’s career (up to his emergence) has been full of managers either sniping about him or not playing him regularly. When he got a good run at Forest he was a big part of their promotion and we signed him off the back of that. Warnock (cunt) couldn’t resist having a pop and Conte waded straight in the his “club signing” tantrum.
I actually feel for the lad and am pleased as punch that he’s finally got the chance to shut his doubters up.

Yep I remember you and me pulling for him against a pretty vocal mob banging on about attitude. It got so weird I actually took it on myself to find out his story from coaches that worked with Spence. It was obvious he wasn't some big time Charlie with an attitude problem. He's not sassing people or adversarial he's just quiet and introspective.

The people I talked to made me more worried, because you are going to get more kids like Djed. They are a products of the screen age. Its too late its happened and in all fairness they didn't ask for it. This is the generation that will never make a phone call. If our setup is so old school it can't communicate well with them we will lose loads of talent.

This stuff matters to me because I volunteer to work with kids like Djed Spence and men like Warnock and a few of the contributors on this forum are frankly a complete hindrance. I'd not let Warnock work with anyone of this type at all.

What Ian Wright said to Djed Spence

Wright and Spence have had a good relationship for some time.

Indeed, Wright has been a champion of Spence going back to his loan at Nottingham Forest, and he’s always been keen to see the full-back succeed.

Wright actually spoke to Spence after his most recent performance for Spurs, and he implored him to keep up his recent form because things are now starting to click into place.

“You know, I want to give flowers to Djed Spence, Tottenham. I want to give flowers to Djed Spence for the way that he’s come through and what he’s done. I remember speaking to Djed Spence, watching him now play for Tottenham and watching him being one of the star players and fingers crossed that he gets a mention for England or gets involved,’ Wright said.

But I remember when they beat us in the cup, the first time we wore the white shirts, no more red, and we played Forest, he was on loan from Middlesbrough to Forrest, and he was the man of the match in that game, ripped us to shreds, Forest beat us. And afterwards he came over, I was speaking to him, his mom, I think his dad was, I think his girlfriend was filming. And I said to him, my friend, listen, I don’t know what’s going on at Middlesbrough, why you can’t make the Middlesbrough side.

I don’t know what’s going on here where you’re playing here and you’re ripping this team to shreds, arse to shreds, what’s going on with you? And like, you know what I mean? He was kind of like, yeah”

“I said, listen, man, don’t waste it, bro. You’ve got something, man. You can’t, don’t waste it through anything like, oh, he can’t get on with this. Don’t waste it.

“And then watching him now for Tottenham, and I saw him at the last game.

“He came over, we had a little chat and I said, please, Djed, whatever you’re doing, continue to do it because it’s happening, bro. It’s starting to happen. And when I watch him now, I’ve seen him blast, we’ve just seen him score the other day.”

I was also pulling for him but I’m not obsessed with blaming the manager that finally gave him a chance for not playing earlier.

Conte was straight up stubborn about Djed. That’s not the same.

This is 100% bang on the money.

Warnock was made to look a fool by the form Spence produced at Forest while on loan. The fact the old twat was given a platform, to attempt to justify his shit decision to loan Spence, is the real issue here.

Spurs then signed Spence, ahead of many other interested clubs, and these allegations about Spence have been repeated continually as justification for Spence's absence from the Spurs first team.

Even Jason McGovern, on LWOS, who I usually appreciate, took the opportunity recently to repeat the nonsense that has been spouted about Djed Spence.

How can it be that we now live in a world where Paul Gascoigne running around naked, firing his air rifle at the WHL cockeral, or getting bladdered can be remembered with a type of sentimental nostalgia; but a picture of Spence, with a cigar on, in the dressing room, after a game, which was clearly a joke, can be used as justification for bad mouthing a brilliant young player who has proved that every manager who failed to give him a first team opportunity, for a sustained period of time, was wrong?

Ange's assertion that he was testing Spence is just embarrassing. It's as bad as Warnock's bullshit.

Both of these arseholes have made plenty of mistakes and this is just an example of them attempting to shift the blame in a direction that it doesn't belong in.

Steve Cooper knew Spence's worth.

End of story.

The only gooner I can’t hate.

Djed getting his PL career going late probably reminds Ian Wright of himself as well.

Let's be honest here , it's taken for us to be on our arses to give Spence his chances . With an average of 10 players on the treatment table for the last 3-4 months has led to Ange giving Spence his chance . The fact that Djed Spence got off the bench and grabbed it with both hands is Kudos to the lad . I have no doubts whatsoever that Spence would have got there in the end , but to rise quickly has all been down to his extreme efforts . Long may it continue .

Totally agree.
If Genoa had come forward with £9 million or whatever it was, Ange would have signed off on that quite happily.
Equally, had we not been obliterated with injuries then we’d have still been playing Porro & Udogie week in, week out.
He’s been a revelation and that’s down to him & him alone.
He’s made a lot of people look like chumps.
Genoa must be kicking themselves because the money they could have got him for looks like small change now.
It’s a great story of overcoming doubters everywhere he’s been in his career.

Not quite true. Spence's first Premier league start came on 15th December against Southampton where both Porro and Udogie were fit. Porro was rested and Spence played Right Back (and was excellent).

Spence hasn't missed a game since (except through suspension or himself being rested as he's now 1st choice).

For context, Harry Kane didn't make his first EPL start under Pochettino until November 2nd in 2014. Kane was a far more established player than Spence was at the beginning of this season.

Moral of the story is that good players who work hard will get their chances under any manager who isn't a complete stubborn cunt like Conte or just a dinosaur cunt like Warnock
