Goalkeepers
IMO Southgate regards Pickford as no 1 GK so will stay in the squad.
But Butland at Stoke (now in Championship) is in poor form, Pope dislocated his shoulder.

So :

IMO, Southgate will bring in Angus Gunn to take a detailed look at him in place of Pope. But Gunn now at Southampton has limited experience of club football at senior levels

He could go back to Joe Hart, but I doubt it until Hart has had a good club run. Ditto Tom Heaton (and of course Pope, Hart and Heaton are all at Burnley)
Will he call up Alex McCarthy at Southampton who Southgate has allegedly looked at.?

What other decent options are there in PL (or even Championship) ?

This was the squad for the World Cup :

Jordan Pickford (Everton),
Jack Butland (Stoke)
Nick Pope (Burnley)

Phil Jones (ManU)
John Stones (ManCity)
Harry Maguire (Leicester)
Garry Cahill (Chelsea)

Kyle Walker (ManCity) RB/CB
Kieran Trippier (Tottenham) RB/LB
Danny Rose (Tottenham) LB
Ashley Young (ManU) RB/LB/Wing
Trent Arnold – Alexander (Liv’pl) RB

Eric Dier (Tottenham) (CM/CB)
Jordon Henderson (Liverpool)
Fabian Delph (Manchester City)

Dele Alli (Tottenham Hotspur)
Jesse Lingard (Manchester United)
Raheem Sterling (Manchester City)
Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Chelsea)

Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur),
Marcus Rashford (Manchester Utd),
James Vardy (Leicester)
Danny Welbeck (Woolwich)

Obviously Southgate couldn't pick a few players who were injured.

Assuming Southgate likes the core of the squad and wants to build on that , who do you think he will drop and who do you think he will bring into the squad of 23 players ? (ie same number of players in as out)
Got to drop the ones who can't even get a game at club level and are not likely to improve.
So Cahill, wellbeck, Delph and Rose to be dropped?
Goalkeeper position other then Pickford is anyone's guess

Agreed.

LB - Chilwell (or possibly Shaw in) for Rose

CB - Multitude of decent (but not top class) options including Mawson, Lascalles, Tardowski, but I think he will go for Gomez (Liverpool) who was injured for WC squad.

CM - Winks back in for sure replacing Delph.
Maybe Cook (Bournemouth) for Loftus Cheek who won't get many minutes at Chelsea this season ? or for Henderson (Liverpool)

Welbeck was in as a utility player - so Southgate has many options. Personally I'd like to see Callum Wilson (Bournemouth) in to look at as a striker option as we have few options.

There must be a centre back in the country who is better than Phil Jones. Would like to see this being used as a platform to integrate players who will be around for the Euros, so drop Cahill, Young, Delph, Welbeck and perhaps even Vardy, Rose and Henderson and take a gamble on some of the younger ones.

CB to replace Jones & Cahill - Multitude of decent (but not top class) options including Mawson, Lascalles, Tardowski, but I think he will go for Gomez (Liverpool) who was injured for WC squad as the first replacement. Maybe toss a coin for the second option from the other 3 ?

Young - could be replaced by a right back to compete with Trippier, but not sure any of the options are that good (reg Clyne), think I'd prefer to take an extra CB as Gomez can play RB as can Walker, so plenty of options for both RB and CB

Delph - replaced by Winks

Welbeck/Vardy - Either Callum Wilson to test out another striker to rest Kane (and maybe replace 31 year old Jamie Vardy in time) or try out Maddison as another AM or both ?.

Henderson - I'd try out Cook at Bournemouth unless there's another decent option.

Rose - replace with Chillwell

Personally I'd look to rest a fair few that haven't had a decent preseason & look to give the likes of Sancho, Foden, Winks, Lewis Cook, Chilwell etc a chance to stretch their legs.

It's as important to give possible solutions to troublesome areas a run out as it is giving some much needed rest to ones you already know a lot about. They deserve time to rest and focus on their club football so early into the season

I'd certainly like to give the likes of Kane a rest - I read somewhere that with the likes of u20's and u21's he's only had one tournament free summer in about 5 or 6 years, so a few extra weeks off after another busy summer would be well deserved.

But if Southgate does take that option, I think it can only be to about 4 - 6 players as otherwise there will be too many changes in the squad....and the number of quality players to choose from really isn't that deep, unless Southgate is going to promote the best of u21's u20's and u19's who have had very little first team action at their clubs but do look to have great potential (eg Foden....and even Skipp). The likes of Chilwell, Cook and Winks are logical players to bring into the squad though

But how far would you go ? Who would you rest, who would you bring in , and who discard from the WC squad

I'd rest the majority of the starting XI, bar Pickford who doesn't really need a rest as he's a goalkeeper. Keep the fringe players as part of my squad & promote them to the first team and bring in younger, less experienced players to take their place as backups or to rotate.

It's a silly little friendly barely 2 months after reaching a World Cup semi final. The senior players need to rest more than they do play in a game like this. Keep the goalkeepers the same, at a stretch call up a couple of the players that were in the starting XI where the squad is thin on (Maguire, Stones etc) but I'd look to rest a lot of them so they get 2 weeks to get their heads well and truly back into domestic football

I wonder how much importance that The FA will attach to 'The Nations League' ? And also whether (like previous England managers) Southgate will insist that he only gets to see the players a few times a year so 'they must play'.

Personally I'd prefer the FA to have scrapped this match as it is, as you say shortly after the WC matches and none of the England players have had any kind of a pre-season so better for them to either train with their clubs, or more likely the clubs give them a week off with families.

But since the match is on, its a question as to what they do. Its even possible Southgate will call up a squad of say 35 or 40 - with the likes of Sancho, Foden et al to train (and socialise with) with the England squad so that Southgate can look at most of the possible players he might call on for the next year or more

Ok - A suggested squad with World Cup players retained (in black), World Cup players not includes (in red) and new players included (in blue)

Jordan Pickford (Everton),
Jack Butland (Stoke) Alex McCarthy (Southampton)
Nick Pope (Burnley) Angus Gunn (Southampton)

Phil Jones (ManU) James Tarkowsi (Burney)
John Stones (ManCity)
Harry Maguire (Leicester)
Garry Cahill (Chelsea) Alfie Mawson (Fulham)

Kyle Walker (ManCity) RB/CB
Kieran Trippier (Tottenham) RB/LB
Danny Rose (Tottenham) LB Ben Chilwell (Leicester)
Ashley Young (ManU) RB/LB/Wing Joe Gomez (Liverpool)
Trent Arnold – Alexander (Liv’pl) RB

Eric Dier (Tottenham) (CM/CB)
Jordon Henderson (Liverpool) Lewis Cook (Bournemouth)
Fabian Delph (Manchester City) Harry Winks (Spurs)

Dele Alli (Tottenham Hotspur)
Jesse Lingard (Manchester United)
Raheem Sterling (Manchester City)
Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Chelsea)

Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur),
Marcus Rashford (Manchester Utd),
James Vardy (Leicester) Callum Wilson (Bournemouth)
Danny Welbeck (Woolwich) James Madison (Leicrster)

Thoughts ?

Leon Bailey wouldn't be eligible. His grandparents weren't born in England.

I think he's holding out for German citizenship to be honest - though he can also play for Belgium, I believe.

One of the weaknesses in the England squad is central midfield, in particular if Reuben Loftus Cheek is not going to be a regular starter at Chelsea.

My best choices are probably Tom Davies (Everton) age 20, James Ward-Prowse (Southampton) age 23 or Will Hughes (Watford ex Derby) age 23 - the first two have played a lot of PL football for their ages, whereas Hughes has played most of his in the Championship. Oxlade-Chamberlain remains injured, otherwise he'd be on that list

The likes of JonJo Shelvey (Newcastle) 26 and even Wheelchair 26 are probably not out of the picture but not sure either of them are good enough now, and are not likely to develop further whereas the 3 above at least have potential to develop further.

After that both Josh Onomah and Jack Grealish might be on the list after the others !

Any thoughts on alternatives to RLC ?

Winks, Foden, Cook are certainly 3 who we should be looking to get in and around the squad and padding out with the experience of Henderson and Dier.

Though I do like Will Hughes and think it'd be harsh if he never got an England call up. Looks to have started the season off very well with Watford too.
