My issue is, if we're already willing to pay in the stratosphere of 50 million euros, then 55 plus conditional bonus payments (which they'd likely accept) should be enough. If we think he's a top tier recruit - which our offer says he is - then we should pay it, seeing we have no real alternatives.
If we don't think he's a top tier recruit, we shouldn't be paying more than 30 million euros for him.
Smart clubs operate in tiers of recruitment and pony up extra when they really want that individual, or don't when they have similar alternatives.
We haggle based on a few euros as a principle. And it's cost us dearly over the last decade.
Didn't we finish up paying the price for Sissoko after baulking and haggling at the price of Poch's main targets throughout that summer window?
