Walker, Eriksen, Kane, literally three of our best players in recent years and all left when we wanted to keep them.
We sold Eriksen for £17M we didn't need because he was very straightfoward with the club that he had no intention of extending his contract. In fact, Eriksen blatantly said when we first signed him that he viewed football as a vehicle for him to see the world and experience different cultures, and that he intended to play for several clubs in various countries during his career.

Walker told Poch to put him on the bench in the middle of a title fight because he didn't care anymore and was going to leave. Eriksen bluntly stated he would not renew his contract and was leaving, so we sold him for what we could get. Kane gave an interview before the season had ended begging to go play at City, we told them to fuck off, he pouted for 2 months and then made it clear he had no interest in a new contract so we sold him for a club record fee to a club we'll very rarely, if ever, face.

You realize they aren't slaves, correct? Players have agency, and have since Bosman. "We" can't just decide that players are going to play for us and they have to.

Wind it in.

Players had the upper hand long before Bosman. We lost our status as a top tier club when the maximum wage was abolished in 1961 and Bill Nick refused to pay under the table "signing fees". The top players began to give us a miss and went to the clubs who would pay those sums - we attracted players of less and less quality until the situation came to a head with our relegation in 1977.

Isn't the problem that we didn't convince top ambitious players that this was a club worth staying at rather than we didn't "force" unhappy players to stay?

Mate, don't bother.

These folks are literally convincing themselves of things that never even happened to try and resolve some feelings of inadequacy they just don't seem to know how to reconcile.

I will have you know that I am fully aware of how to reconcile my numerous inadequacies

fun laughing GIF

Trapped them lol.

That's pure hyperbole being used to confirm your extreme bias.

My point, which you seemingly agree with and rhus disagree with JT about is that we did convince them.... mostly with vast sums of money.

Either these guys hate the board they make up stuff to confirm their bias or they actually believe their own lies to the point they just become gospel truth in their heads, either way it's pretty funny

Has to be some sort of illness...

How did we manage to keep Kane for so long then? Or Lloris? Or Eriksen? Or Vertonghen? Or Son?

Firstly, there is a difference in level and mentality between the berbatovs, modrics, Bales, and walkers of this world vs those willing to live in a comfort zone.

I love all of the players you mentioned but:

- vertonghen was not likely to displace a cb at an elite club capable of winning the prem, nor was he ever a serious target for any of them. He had his own limitations.

-eriksen could have jumped ship but nobody came in with the money it took.

-lloris same story as eriksen while in peak form but the last few years he was nowhere near the level and did he really have the hunger to join an elite

- kane and son, ill give you that, either of them could easily have forced a move to an elite but incredible loyalty

All of these players also were at spurs during a period of ascension and optimism. When that dried out it didn't take long for kane to say bye.

So when people moan about us not keeping players, it's not that we can't or don't. It's that spurs have been in incredibly unique situations of being one or two top signings off winning major honours during a period where this ownership have actively decided to prioritise the stadium and revenue. If we kept the above and finished the squad, the narrative is very different.

You may disagree but as a fan defending the status quo, you have been taken for a ride. Unless, you're glad we didn't make the final push for a trophy in favour of the beautiful stadium, then fair play to you, its all opinion.

Nope, said several times that we should have pushed on at various stages in the last 10 years or so and have been disappointed we didn't.

Doesn't change the fact that we are not the selling club of the past, whatever reason you want to give for why, we aren't. Some of that is down to an improved wage structure, some is us being more competitive and regularly playing in the CL and I'm sure there are other factors.

RE the stadium, you make a good point and it was clearly a, not rhe but a, reason as to why we couldn't push on but as I laid out in here a couple of days ago, I believe that despite the excuses made for our manager and players, we have had a good enough side to be in, and win finals multiple times the last 10-15 years.
