I was attempting to find an analogy that might help you understand the really simple concept of being behind, but getting closer. I appear to have failed.
Are we getting closer? Is the direction of travel forward?

I don't mean to continue to torture your analogy, but I think that kinda reveals the incoherence, you have to find a way to synthesize a reality in which we've painstakingly dragged ourselves to within touching distance of financial parity, and yet have drifted competitively further off than we were 15 years ago.

If I’m racing you in the 1500m and I’m 30 yards behind you at halfway, but just before we cross the finish, I’m right behind you, i was well behind you but am closing in. Didn’t really think this would be the bit that was up for debate.

With the MGW fiasco, Sonny's retirement sorry, departure!
...
and now Maddison's injury (to compound Kulu's absence) and ENIC have no choice now, they really DO have to pull the trigger on signing a MAJOR, 1st team ready #10...
Eze has always been my preference, as he seemingly would absolutely tick all the boxes...
But somehow the Woolwich-loving online mafia have somehow convinced the world he's a Gooner....
I'm genuinely not so sure, and still can't rule out the GLARINGLY OBVIOUS FACT that he has SPURS written all over him!

ENIC need to get Eze in .... Would change the whole landscape of this transfer window... especially if we beat the Arse to him!!

Fans here thinking were bigger than Liverpool because we finished above them in the league for 8 years last decade is laughable.

That’s West Ham behaviour and it’s embarrassing.

I don’t think a single fan on here thinks we are a bigger club in Liverpool. We were very recently in a very comparable or even superior position to them where they nearly went in to administration, had a horrendous squad and collapsing revenue and managed to turn it round incredibly quickly through very good ownership.

They have accelerated past us and never looked back. Same as Woolwich recently. Now Villa, Newcastle etc are overtaking us. Hopefully we’ve got a burst of energy in us because at the moment we are plodding.

Read the thread. There absolutely are people saying that and it’s truly incredible.

Liverpool have been very well run. We agree. They have also benefited from some luck but they have done a great job.

Woolwich are ahead but it’s cyclical with is. We’ll see how long this cycle goes for them and we will be better than them in a few years. That’s the way it’s gonna be which is better than having been worse than them for 20+ years before.

Villa and Newcastle haven’t overtaken us. And if you were fans of theirs you’d be dying at their transfer windows!

It isn’t cyclical. If they continue paying 70m for players like Zubimendi and Gyokores and 100m for Rice and continue with that academy they will keep being ahead of us. There’s zero reason for us to ever have a pathway to overtaking them currently beyond blind belief - they spend more on everything and are better throughout the squad. When we were under Poch we were very good but stagnating. There was no investment. And we are doing nothing now to catch up with Woolwich - loan to buys and some kids now and again isn’t it, chief.

Villa have finished ahead of us for three seasons. They are favourites by a good margin to be ahead of us next season. Newcastle ahead for 2/3 of the last 3 seasons. Neither have had a good window but that’s due to PSR restrictions; we just choose to be unambitious and lame despite loads of PSR wiggle room.

The absolute best we could hope for league wise next season is 5th. That’s a dream scenario. What a depressing fall off.

I don't think that's true today in strict betting odds terms, but it may wind up seeming obvious in retrospect.

I think we probably have the widest range of reasonably possible outcomes of any team in the league atm. Unless you believe in the possibility of a United title challenge I guess, which seems beyond the realm of reasonable to me.

It's difficult to deny Levy's penchant for finding a stroke of good luck when all seems lost.

You’re right actually - both equals to finish top 4. Behind United and Newcastle. They’ve had a very quiet window.

I think we could be solid and functional under Frank and do quite well but our ceiling with the transfer policy is clear. Making up the gap on the top 4 who are already streets ahead and spending more on better players is a hilariously tough ask unless one of them have a mare.

He doesn’t go back 15 years. He selects our best 8 years relative to them and focuses on league finishes. Even when we were better on the field, they still spanked us under AVB and won a cup.

If you ACTUALLY go back 15 years, Liverpool have 1 champions league, 2 league titles, 1 FA cup and 3 league cups. We have won the Europa league.

Please tell me who has been more successful.

I’m struggling here because it’s fast becoming not worth my time.
That would be Liverpool obviously, why do you ask are you a fan?
