The silent rock.

Made me eat tons of shit this season.

My man.
Romero is our best defender. But Dier is the player that allows Romero to play like he does. Dier, Romero and Ben compliment each other very well and it shows in the stability that we have in the backline now.

Having Dier centrally in defence is a calming presence for the entire backline. Sanchez looks a lot more comfortable with Dier next to him as well in the 3 at the back.

I'm not particularly a fan of Eric Dier but Patrick Vieira should be charged with the same 'crime' Dier did. Eric was provoked by (Spurs) fans who were attacking his brother and went into the crowd. He did not actually do anything other than that.

The FA charged him in the middle of COVID when people were dying!!

Just coz Vieira was also provoked he cannot get away with doing a Cantona on a fan winding him up so he must get a 3-match ban and a fine.

Fans invading pitches should get punished also or controlled by better policing at grounds. I hope they don't have any new incidents this weekend as the FA have been clearly warned and still are getting caught out!

Um no, not even remotely the same thing lol

If you watch him closely, he spends a lot of time shouting at the back line, Emerson in particular trying to get him to drop off or push up.

It's funny that it works, cos in actual defending Dier is often being rescued by Davies and Romero, cos Dier is so passive in the actual defensive engagements. He just wants to stand off and stay goalside of his man as long as possible, even when that doesn't make sense. Thank god Romero is elite at rushing out, and shutting dow the attack before it develops too much.

In many ways its a bit like John Terry and Carvalho, one of them went for the ball, the other covered, I only hope they can become as successful

Jan and Toby were the same.

Dier is also a lynchpin in the way that he is multi lingual. He's fluent in English, Portuguese and Spanish. So he is able to communicate with the rest of the defence in their own tongues. Which probably is a big reason why he organises the defence for us.

His still generally shit. Even against Burnley he loses his man in the box and they have a free header. Not commanding enough in the box and is often too slow playing the ball out. He just nonchalantly passes the ball around at the back all the while the oppo get back into position.

winkitis i call that disease.

suck any tempo out of your own team and let the other team reset shape....then passing a simple ball to another team mate and let them carry the burden of breaking down a well shaped opposition.

Just a reminder to those who vouch for Conte to buy a CB to replace Dier this summer... this is what he said about Dier back in December. Some may have laughed but fact is that Dier has developed into a solid CCB.

Antonio Conte has piled praise on Eric Dier and believes the English defender can go on to become of the best centre backs in world football.

Dier has been one of Tottenham's best players so far this season and has played every minute in the Premier League since the arrival of Conte.

While Conte acknowledged that the 27-year-old is not the finished article he believes Dier has huge potential to be among the best in the business.

'Eric Dier can become one of the best players in the world in that position,' Conte told reporters ahead of Wednesday's Carabao Cup quarter-final with West Ham.

'For sure he needs to work and continue to improve and understand the movement with the defensive line.

'He has to lead more, because in that position you have to speak a lot because you have to stay in the middle, at the back where you can see everything.

'He has a great space for improvement but we are talking about a really good player, strong physically with a good personality and good technically because he was a midfielder.'

Conte added: 'This role is perfect for him. He has to continue this way because he can become one of the best central defenders.'

Fans have been impressed with the early signs of Dier under Conte with his performances akin to what they saw in yesteryear from Toby Alderweireld.

Dier is an exemplary passer with the long diagonal Alderweireld mastered and Conte is using Dier as a ball-playing centre back given his comfort in midfield, as well as defence.

Dier completed 51 of his 58 attempted passes in Tottenham's 2-2 draw against high-flying Liverpool at the weekend and was praised for his role in nullifying Mohamed Salah.

In a back three alongside Ben Davies and Davinson Sanchez in the Liverpool draw, Dier looks at home in Conte's preferred back three system.

Earlier this month Dier spoke of the 'tough' training sessions Conte launched on his arrival to galvanise a side that was floundering under his predecessor, Nuno Espirito Santo.

'There's been tough training sessions, which is a good thing,' Dier told Sky Sports News. 'The boys have really enjoyed the time we've had and the tough sessions.

'A lot of us were here under (Mauricio) Pochettino so we were prepared in some way. It's been really enjoyable to work in that way and to really push ourselves.

'The manager has an incredible passion and intensity towards football, but off the pitch he's very personal.'

Dier and Conte will look to make home advantage count on Wednesday night in their last-eight meeting with West Ham in the Carabao Cup.

Spurs have failed to win a trophy since winning the League Cup competition back in 2008.
