That’s it in a nutshell. Dier wasn’t too clever for the Everton winner opening week, or too clever when we fell behind at Southampton last week (which could have been a lot more serious if they’d capitalised on first half dominance and chances to extend their lead) and now today. There’s been 6 clean sheets in 29 league games since Mourinho took over and Dier has been centre half for not of those. It’s simply not a position on the field where you can do with a makeshift option. Defending with your back to the ball like Dier did at the end there today is a receive for disaster.
While it would have been harsh to blame him for the penalty moment, the exact same thing happened to him just a few minutes before. It should have woken him up and be thankful that he got away with it. Second time round , he cant lose sight of the ball and be caught out in the same way. For that reason, he should be blamed especially because he has defended like an idiot in previous games too (eg the goal vs Everton)

He's a defender that gives VAR a lot of decisions to make. It might not be his fault, but the top defenders don't find themselves caught out on an almost weekly basis.

Shame there will be no fans there Tuesday as I think Dier would have got a good reception to show he was not at fault for penalty.

I'd like to think the other lads will do that for us.

That said, there's a fair few miserable cunts in our fanbase that evidently don't share this sentiment to begin with. :(

Was it Napoleon that said he only picked up his generals on the basis of how lucky they were. Dier when he’s not fucking up just seems one of those unlucky people in life who Just attracts calamity. It’s a bit like walking under a ladder. Playing him at centre back is just inviting disaster.
Regardless of what you think about his footballing abilities the guy doesn't shy away from a situation or a tackle and I respect him for that. Put him up against arseholes like Pogba and Carroll and they will always try to take advantage and you will inevitably have penalty incidents. You then have to rely on the referee and VAR to use some logic and give Dier the benefit of any doubts they may have. Sadly that doesn't happen and they succumb to pressure.
