There's also another option if he isn't valued at £50m at the end of the loan spell but we still want him. He gets to the end of his loan spell, we don't trigger the £50m clause but instead we put in an offer for £20m or something. The player and his agent can refuse to talk to any other clubs (which would coincidently leave more money for wages and agent fees), leaving Benfica with the choice of taking an unhappy player that they don't necessarily need back on the wage bill for 2 years until he can leave for free or do a deal with Spurs. I'm sure Levy and Mendez haven't thought of this though.
