It's not just injuries but also the style of our play that changed massively away from his profile. He's really good in a possession-based team, one that dominates the ball. His biggest weakness is off the ball, oppo runs off him way to easily, and he closes down/presses in a way that is bypassed, or easily played around, his decisions he makes about when to engage or stand a player up are also really poor.Winks is a good player. Several caps for England and helped us get UCL a few times.
English luck that cursed Andros and Dele and Ryan that injuries curtailed great careers.
Let's hope H can set his career back on track.
So, by the time he made his comeback following his ankle injury, and a couple of other related injuries, Poch's Spurs was no longer a possession dominant team that pressed high and played with a high back-line. Basically, we were becoming the entirely wrong fit of a team for his profile. This only got worse when we got in the dinosaur he didn't want us to have the ball at all!!!
The player he most resembles is Jourginho. A woeful player without the ball but for most of his career at Chelsea they've been playing as a possession dominate side, so it's suited him to a tee. (My gut tells me that Winks might have been a better player too as I think he carries the ball better and perhaps is better physically built for the PL, but this is a speculative bet as we deprived, just as he was, what would have been some prime years at the heart of a good possession based PL team).
