they should of scored from the winks fuckup...thats how much of a fuckup it was! whoever picked the ball up had an attacker free to his right and he chose to play the wrong ball....a good side punishes in that situation.

Winks made some good plays… but made a couple plays deep in our own half where he was tripping over the ball looking like a bumbling idiot. Has to clean that up.

Yea, Id agree that the level of mistake doesnt change just because the opposite side failed to capitalize on it. While Winks' fuckup was bad obviously, Dier's fuckup was a huge fuckup. Now just because Sanchez got there in the end and Southampton failed to capitalise on it, it doesnt mean Dier did well.

I didn’t realise that all you needed to win a football match was 2 players to have good games. My mistake.
Nobody talk about what Winks doing during Ward-Prowse goal? Before the corner kicked, he was our closest player in front of Ward Prowse (Son was closer to Ward-Prowse, but he was behind and unlikely can do nothing. Keep the criticism for Son in his own thread if anyone interested). For some unknown reasons, Winks decided to back away, and continue to do so until the ball is in our net.
With Son, we know Conte wants to use his pace for counter/out ball. Son can be criticized for being lazy of course. Winks though. Being a wimp, he's not tasked with physical challenge aerial duel in the box. He was clearly asked to stay at the edge of our box so he can pressure, close shooting angle, block this kind of set play from an opposition player outside of the box. Yet Winks somehow ended up further away from Ward Prowse at the end of the conceded goal. Dele gave the effort trying to rush forward toward Ward-Prowse in comparison!
We don't play against 10 men opposition very often. Decent game after Southampton went down 10 men. Before that, it's same old shit.

Noticed his passing is more forward orientated. But this also factored into the couple of mistakes he made.
He dwelled on the ball because I think he's now afraid of the stick he gets for passing it back all the time. In the situations where he almost got caught, he had an easy pass on back to the defender or keeper. But because people get on his back for this he seems reluctant to play it back choosing instead to hold on to it. Against a team like Southampton you will get pressed and forced into mistakes. I said during the game, the midfield 3 has no press resistance and we struggled to play through midfield on the first half.
The other in defence of Winks is that the other players don't offer too many options when he has possession. Winks more often than not offers to collect the ball, but who gives him the option when Winks has the ball. Dele and PEH were useless at this. I'm dead certain with Skipp next to him we would have been much better at progressing the ball through midfield.
Both Winks and Skipp offer themselves to the man on the ball. All the other players just stand and gawp at the player with possession. This is why we are shit when the onus is on to find a goal with the possession of the ball. It's our single biggest deficiency and why 4 managers since poch, including Conte have resorted to counter attack tactics. We don't have the ability on the ball or the movement off it to play a possession based system.
However, I still believe this can be coached.
Winks playing in the deeper role is what Conte has done as posted before. This is your classic QB position. The guys who sprays the ball from deep from central areas.
Closest thing we have had to this recently was actually eriksen.
Eriksen used to collect the ball off the defence, something that went under the radar as he was thought of as an AM. This allowed space for the DMs (Dembele, Wanyama, Winks, Dier etc) to split and offer themselves as options. It gave Eriksen targets to pass the ball to. Conte did this with eriksen at inter. You'll see how deep eriksen played. Winks doesn't have the same ability as eriksen but this is the role he is being instructed to play, but it requires us to be good in possession and other players to offer themselves as targets. If they don't then Winks looks shit because he has to hold on to the ball, which is a recipe for disaster.
This is all in possession of the ball. Something we don't generally have much of. Therefore you then have to look at his contribution out of possession to really judge his overall performance. He has added good bite in midfield past 2 games, but he's not known for defensive work. PEH and Dele didn't help him much in this aspect either. I don't think a midfield 3 suits us regardless of which combination of players we play. PEH was totally fecking useless. He actually evened the numbers up with his invisible performance.
I would be interested to see how a Skipp and Winks 2 man midfield does. It might be too samey but our play actually may be better in possession of the ball. Ndombele and GLC are now lost causes...personally I would give some minutes to Harvey White in this QB role. His range of passing is superior to anyone at the club in that position.
