yea i think modric was even a LW at times especially at start of spurs career. as has been said hes a playmaker and the game changed to have the playmakers more deeper as opposed to the old number 10 role behind the striker.

He was our best player vs Southampton and our best player vs Liverpool too, so all this 'just because he was okay' stuff is nonsense, he was very good. It's okay to admit when a player you don't fancy actually has a great game.

Does this mean he's now good enough? Probably not, in general I favour years of evidence vs a few great performances, even if he was playing under the 'wrong' managers. End of the day it's up to Conte, if he rates him then he'll play him regardless of whether some fans think Winks is a fraud or not.

Yeah, long term I fully expect us to replace him in the lineup .. I don't know why people seem to be scared or annoyed by a fictional scenario in which Winks continues to play well and apparently Conte is so enamoured we sign nobody.

you say he was our best player, against ten men its easy for the CM's as they have so much more space now, its probably the position that benefits the most. we didnt win either of them games. if we had actual quality in the middle we would be winning both games comfortably.

He played a great ball which won us the penalty & red card in the first place. As a team we were struggling with an insanely good Southampton pressing game and I don't think he was notably struggling any more than others, and was actually dealing with it better than most.

And we didn't not beat Liverpool or Southampton because of Winks, in fact if our other midfielders had put in performances on the level he did, we win both.

But yes, we still need to be bringing in better midfielders, it's a weak area. But for now, with the players we actually have, Winks is justifying his place. That's all I really care about currently. Conte can't play midfielders we don't actually have yet.

All the "yeh, but 10-men" crap is just that anyway..... They would have faded like they (and most other extreme presses) usually do.... 10 men forced Hassenhuttel to be pragmatic despite him otherwise being naive and stupid...... See 5-1 vs us last season... 9-0 vs United..... 9-0 vs Leicester.

We'd have picked them off on the counter 11 v 11... I'm convinced of it; whereas we struggled vs the parked bus.

It's not naive to just be able to recognise when a player is doing good stuff regardless of his name. You're just blinded by the fact its Winks, whereas I don't give a shit what the name is on the back of shirt, I'm just seeing a midfielder who is putting in 8/10 performances right now, and that's obviously good enough for him to be playing.

You're acting like I'm hyping him up or pretending he's now the answer to all our problems, when all I'm saying is a player who is performing well is .. performing well. I leave whether he needs to be upgraded up to Conte.

It was a bad moment. He's still Winks, he hasn't transformed in to a flawless player. But on the whole it was a strong performance, from my perspective. He mostly did a good job in midfield and played a number of very good passes which created good opportunities.

He doesn't have to start him. Nor does he have to single him out for praise, which I doubt he would do if he thought he was a useless player.
