Ex-Spurs Player Harry Winks

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Winks is a good player. Several caps for England and helped us get UCL a few times.
English luck that cursed Andros and Dele and Ryan that injuries curtailed great careers.
Let's hope H can set his career back on track.
It's not just injuries but also the style of our play that changed massively away from his profile. He's really good in a possession-based team, one that dominates the ball. His biggest weakness is off the ball, oppo runs off him way to easily, and he closes down/presses in a way that is bypassed, or easily played around, his decisions he makes about when to engage or stand a player up are also really poor.

So, by the time he made his comeback following his ankle injury, and a couple of other related injuries, Poch's Spurs was no longer a possession dominant team that pressed high and played with a high back-line. Basically, we were becoming the entirely wrong fit of a team for his profile. This only got worse when we got in the dinosaur he didn't want us to have the ball at all!!!

The player he most resembles is Jourginho. A woeful player without the ball but for most of his career at Chelsea they've been playing as a possession dominate side, so it's suited him to a tee. (My gut tells me that Winks might have been a better player too as I think he carries the ball better and perhaps is better physically built for the PL, but this is a speculative bet as we deprived, just as he was, what would have been some prime years at the heart of a good possession based PL team).

Doesn't score, doesn't assist, doesn't cross, doesn't shoot, doesn't win the majority of tackles, doesn't win the majority of his duels, rarely plays a key pass.

Retaining possession, in neutral areas of the pitch, by playing short passes, backwards and sideways, sums up Harry Winks professional contribution to any football team.

If he can fool the Italians for a few more seasons; fair play to him.

I don't want to see this joker in a Spurs shirt ever again.

Should buy himself an Ice Cream Van when he eventually comes back to England.

Apart from the fact that all that is utter bollocks. Prior to his injury, no player under the age of 23 had made more progressive passes than Winks IN EUROPE!

You've literally just repeated what Iove just said about what he does/doesn't do OFF THE BALL. All of which is totally not an issue when played alongside a player like Conte/Kovetic or Partey whilst in a team that keeps the ball for +60%!!!

I honestly can't understand just the amount of hatred you can spew towards one of our own, amazed at just how triggered you are at the mention of his name.

I don't hate Harry Winks.

I just find it incredible that anyone ever considered him good enough to play professional football.

Progressive passes?

Is that like xg for midfield players?

What is the relevance of comparing Winks to European players under the age of 23?

Winks is 27!

You rate him; fair enough.

I'd seen enough after about 50 games for Spurs.

John Pratt used to get booed playing in midfield for Spurs in the 70's and 80's.

Pratt scored 39 goals in over 300 Spurs games.

Winks is shite.

End of.

His only problem on the ball is that he's the opposite of press-resistant. He also can't shoot, and a CM should be able to contribute to the odd goal here and there.

It’s a simple as this:
Would you pick him ahead of bentacur, holjberg, bissouma, skipp.
I’ll answer for you. No.
Get as much as we can for him. Nothing against the lad but he isn’t good enough and needs to be moved on down the road.

When he was confident (so when we still pressed high, controlled the mid, and squeezed the pitch with a high back-line and dominated the ball) he would always receive the ball to feet with a player up his chuff, he was fine. He carried the ball well too but did have a tendency to run into trouble before releasing the ball. Few players are truly press resistant, PEH is sometimes, Bentancur is frequently but still gets caught etc... Dembele is truly one of the best I've ever seen and the term should be retired with him (Dembele couldn't shoot too).

Because when he was U23 that's when he/we were a possession-based team. and when he fitted really well in that midfield. THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT I WAS MAKING. He's good ON THE BALL, he's shit OFF THE BALL. this is his profile.

He should play in a team that's possession dominant. We aren't a dominant possession team, we haven't been so for years (including the last couple of seasons under Poch) and this was the team he came back into after his injury, totally the wrong profile for how he/we played.

A "progressive pass" is a pass that moves the ball min 10 yards (30 feet) closer to the goal than where it started or any completed pass into the opponent's penalty area.

I agree but whilst the midfield is clearly better than when Winks and Sissoko played the results are not better than those days

Said Mr no mark poster sat on his sofa scoffing pizza and beer

Nothing new is being discovered from his games for Sampdoria so far. If he gets space he can make some nice passes. When pressed he is attrocious. Was responsible in goals conceded by Sampdoria in the few games hes played already. Italian league is the best place for him. Hopefully someone in that league ends up buying him.
