Come on, if we play 5-2-3 it is absolutely impossible that we could expect THREE players to just wait to "get opportunities in final third". It should be very plan and obvious.
This front 3 has to participate in creating opportunities as well. They have to make these opportunities happen.
But Son absolutely did not make them happen.
Actually our first goal came from a critical moment with Son intercepting a pass, so no, not completely true. Although I do agree, he had a stinker and contributed next to nothing.

Also, who out of our front three created these so called opportunities? We already know that Son is ineffective when the ball deep in on our half. That has always been his biggest weakness and is not surprising that he struggled with James manmarking him and getting pressured.

On the contrary, aren't we always commending Kane (and Kulu in some respects) for being great at helping out with build up / hold up play - that his 'all around' play is so great. Isn't that why we call Kane the most complete attacker in the world, a distinction that Son (nor Kulu) gets? Where was that yesterday? If he wants that distinction, he needs to show up consistently, not bits and pieces of the season where he can look bang average for long stretches.

I get that he got his goal and that's what matters most but when you're talking about other variables in a game that would constitute in a player being complete, Kane's game was missing.

How good is Reece James though? At both ends of the pitch. I know Trent AA has a wand of a right-foot, but I'd take James over him all day, every day. I think some people forget sometimes that James himself is only 22 because of how he looks and his build.

TAA doesn't have much other than that wand.......

James is a top player AND has quality delivery.

Right now, if we could nab any player from another EPL club, it'd be him.

Whilst Son has been subdued in the first 2 games, we've had other players come in and change matches (Richi Laaa & Perisic yesterday)
What was more concerning in previous years was that if So or Kane weren't firing, WE weren't scoring.... not so this season (so far)
We've spread the 6 goals out already (Dier, Sess & Højberg scoring already) add Kane & Deki's contribution (+1 og) and suddenly we're not over reliant on any one player.

He's had pretty much 12 months of solid football including Internationals/WC Qualifying and the travelling that every S.Korea International match he plays involves...
I also think his status in S.Korea has reached new levels, (just look at the reception he got in the Summer tour over there) ...and with that comes even more responsibility and expectation. He's got a superstar status back home, that is now becoming global.
And that in itself may be too much for such a humble and nice guy to deal with all at once!

It's not an excuse, but he may well take a few weeks to get fully up to speed....

It still wouldn't surprise me if Conte rested him on Saturday... not as a punishment, but just to take the pressure off him mentally, and not get into a rut if it's just not clicking this early into the season...
We shouldn't be panicking yet!

But in the meantime, we have plenty of quality up front to soften the blow, and copensate.
Son was actually very good in the first game.

Great player in bad game shocker. Our forward line were stifled with zero attacking support from the wing backs and the midfield essentially out of the game, so not an easy game for anyone to do well in. Especially up against Reece James.

Will never get the urge people have to drop him. He was the league's top scorer last season without pens. Liverpool don't drop Salah every single time he has a poor match because they know long term its worth having him on the pitch more often than not.
All front 3 played like crap and we still came out with a draw. Happy times..

I think some people commented that Darren Ambrose was saying United fans need to back their players at this time, having had years of success under Ferguson. Of course he is right, even if pain is pain and finding context sometimes easier to say than show.

The same with Son and people calling him whatever or calling for him to be dropped because of a relstively poor start to the season.

If it's rotation and staying fresh then fine. If it's because he hasn't scored for 2 games, after what he did last season then people need to find themselves.

We do have options but let's not lose sight too soon or we will fall into the same trap of warped expectation.

Had a poor game by his high standards, though don't forget he was rugby tackled by James twice. And Chelsea were pressing the shit out of the midfield and the WBs struggled so he wasn't getting much service.

Will be back at it soon, I reckon he'll score Vs Wolves.

Yeah, I'd go one better than that and give all the lads a week in Dubai for some chilled out warm weather training, we are 2 whole games into the season after all...

We get this every season without fail with Son. It's 'he's tired, he needs a break' until he scores & then explodes in to life and is scoring every game for 6/7 matches. He's just a bit of a confidence player, you keep him in the team and he'll hit a few runs a season where he just wins you games.

Actually from a coaching perspective, it wouldn't hurt to bench Son and/or Kane early on in the season. It sets the tone for the rest of the players and the squad. We need a next man up mentality so the players that are performing play, and the ones that don't, get dropped. If Conte can drop Son and/or Kane, it sends a message.

How often did Klopp drop Mane or Salah other than when they were injured or had big CL games midweek? We have two world class players who are statistically the best partnership in premier league history, it makes total sense to play them together as often as possible & rotate only when you really need to.

It doesn't send any sort of message other than to drop two world class footballers you'd need a lot more than one poor game at Stamford Bridge. These are players Conte will rightly put his faith in to win us games more often than not.

Everyone is drop-able........

Apart from Jimenez. :nare:

Starting positions needs to be earned not given. If they perform well when given the chance than we will see as the season goes on.

As for now there is no way Son/Kane will be dropped because of 1 game.

I think this guy has a serious mental problem. Pick your fking side already.
