I would not be surprised at all if he has some form of strain in his thumb after all the years of goalkeeping and tapes it on the regular.
Speaking from experience, ligament strains in fingers and thumbs can take forever to heal. I have one in my right thumb and have had for almost a year now and have to tape it up whenever I work out.
Too be fair it doesn't look too serious.
