The reason the FA have said "indefinitely" is that the TV companies have agreed to extend the TV payments until games are played, it's not their problem they know fans will watch whenever. What the FA have sensibly done for now is to ring-fence that TV money.

The issue for the FA is blindingly obvious, at some point they have to commit to the new season, even forgetting players well-being there are all the logistics of arranging fixtures licences, staffing, emergency services to be managed, you have to have a fixture list to do all that. Once the start date for the new season is established, for arguments sake no later than October 1st ... then a 'void' cut-off can be applied to 2019/20 again for arguments sake let's say August 30th. Could you squeeze in an entire season October - May well that's still 33 weekends, play a game every weekend five midweeks, and all cup games midweek ... difficult but possible. That means that all 19/20 games must be finished by August 30th, as soon as that is no longer possible, then call the season void.

Here's a really way 'out of the box' idea that was put forward - play the remaining fixtures and have them count not only for 2019/20 but also for 20/21 ... once the final 19/20 positions are known the three relegated teams results would be annulled and the three promoted sides wold have to squeeze in an extra 8/9 games, however as none would be in the CL that would theoretically be possible ... crazy but in theory possible. TV companies would be asked to pay double for those games that covered two seasons thus ensuring that football survived financially.

Just reading on the BBC about this. They need to be playing again early May to be complete by June 30. There's 9 or 10 matches each in the league for teams but man city could play a max of 19 if the got to both FA cup and CL finals (if they keep the 2 leg ties).

If their 1st game was in May 13th and the played a game every 3 day (have to have 2 days between games usually) the last game would be the 30th of June.

Boris said today we could turn the tide in 12 weeks, that's June 11th. There's no way the government would allow crucial medical staff to supervise the matches and have copper there to stop people gathering by the stadium.
It’s fantasy land. This season is done, end of story.

Why? 3 games and a country (and world) starving for football. Possibly the EPL may be scrapped but the FA Cup..not a chance.

The only reason this gets completed is financiaL. So get clubs can argue over that as clubs further down the pyramid probably wont survive this enforced layoff.

I think you might be a bit surprised by how long it drags on for.

For everyone. Not just footballers. Hearing this AM that June going into July authorities expect NHS to be under serious stress. Football season is not being completed in June.

New idea: Use the rest of the year to finish all leagues and tournaments. Then begin a new era with calendar year schedule from 2021. This will also fit well with World Cup 2022

But then how do you reset it after so that close season in in summer?

European football has played from September to May for nearly 150 years.

Change all that's gone before, just so Liverpool can finish the season? No thanks

The knob-heads that run the Olympics are still dragging their heels over their cancelling this summer's games.

:mourfacepalm:

I'll be so gutted if they cancel the Olympics but there is simply no way it can go ahead. It's the most global of all events and would put everything back to square one.

I think I read contractually it has to be held in 2020... so they are probably panicking about that and seeing if it can be but back. Personally I think it should be pushed to 2022 now. That would make most sense. Even with 2021 I think there would be fears, and all the preliminary stuff and the qualification events that have been impacted already.

The athletes who build up to this must be devastated. For lots they get one or two (max) Olympics at their realistic peak.

The whole sporting calendar will change. WC every four years (even) Euros & Olympics every leap year. So if Olympics put back till 2021 we gonna get them all in odd years !!!
