Transfers January 2018 transfer thread

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

So let me get this straight:

If "investment" means having a positive net spend on transfers.

And investment is the only way to improve the team.

Then how have we got a better squad than we had ten years ago?

Feels like ages since we went for a here and now attacking player. Son?
Maybe Janssen but he strikes me as a player who was meant to be decent cover whilst he developed into a good player but he was not even that tbf.

Excited.

What a bizarre argument

I don't think anybody is saying we literally do not spend money.

The point is surely that if we added quality to what we have rather than replace we'd be stronger.

And that in the context of rival clubs strengthening, us simply retaining or even adding just a little quality can overall leave us in a weaker position than previously, or at the very least in a position where we can't take advantage of great opportunities.

Taken me an hour. But I got there . RE.
Re-investing what you make in sales. No added investment from other income streams etc.....
Finally..., finally we've got there
You could argue your case in terms of percentages if your were smart John

Wages as a percent of revenue ...., maybe its stayed the same ?

If so that's what you could shout about

(I did think we were talking in terms of transfer net spend, as there is no value in wages once they're paid)

Seems like someone's tampered with your wiring again.

Anyway, what with us working this hard to sign Moura, you can now backtrack in front of everyone for how wrong you you were about CM being priority.
Unless you think prioritising means doing it later.
Yet again, your ideas about the club turn out to be very, very different to Pochs.

Awkward
CM is still a priority - Moura proves nothing other than ambition. Unless of course you think both Poch and Dembele are openly lying about his fitness

Do Liverpool invest all the money in players

If I am correct they’ve made money with a net spend of minus £28m this season
Last season they were in negative spend.
We have spent more than them last two seasons
Since 2007/8 they have finished above us 3 times and won a league cup.
We have negative spent in 7 of those seasons.
They have done it 4 times.
The first time they did it in 6 seasons, last year, they got top 4.

We sell players and we buy players with the money
Not unlike what everybody else does.
You can’t just keep adding players. You have parameters like wages and percentage of income.
Of course I’d be surprised if all the money we make goes on the squad. We have been building other stuff.
We ain’t Man City. We can’t build complex’s without it impacting on our spending.
Yet to say we don’t put as much into our squad as most is nonsense .
We don’t spend a far lower percentage than any other club on wages and fees.
The more TV money, commercial sponsorship income you have the more you can spend on wages and fees.
We are no different from Liverpool selling players to buy.
They have sold more of their stars than us in the last 7 seasons.
Compare us to them as they are the closest to us in revenue yet we are still £100m behind them in revenue and £100m behind in wages.
Liverpool are an exception surely !

correlation is rather a weak requirement, it's a question of causality. In which case it's a sufficient cause for success but not a necessary as the history of football is plagues with big spenders falling and small clubs succeeding.
though it may be the easiest way to be good when it all falls into place I still think that if you take west brom and give them 300m to spend over the summer they won't breach top 4 the season after.
Show me examples and by examples I mean clubs consistently competing/winning titles on small budgets
