Like, what happens if Son says he wants to leave in the summer and we didn’t have someone behind him? We’d be in another position where we can’t sell him until we buy a replacement. Mismanaging the selling of players is directly related to the lack of incoming players. Thats why only buying players that fill an immediate need is bad business. Buying players like Bergwijn put you in a better position in the future for outgoings. The Eriksen debacle could’ve been avoided if we made more moves like this.

It’s not all about filling direct needs. That’s shortsighted.

I disagree. If it was made known Eriksen was for sale I think we would have got some decent offers in for him. I think relevant teams would be told he is avaliable & we are open to offers. To be honest I think levy would have wanted stupid money anyway. He has been known to over value our players by a lot. So a sale would have been unlikely with him around & Eriksen still having a couple of years on his contract.

If we are talking about summer 2017 or summer 2018, it would certainly have been financially better for Spurs to receive say £80m (or whatever £ you think fit) for Eriksen, rather than the £20m we will receive now.

But I think there would have been rioting in the streets if Spurs had sold the player at that time - 'its all about money etc'. Think Spurs got away with selling Walker (a much less well regarded player at the time) by leaking that it was Walker who wanted to go to ManCity and our hand was forced into selling him. I don't think the same would have washed for the 2nd time so soon after Walker by selling Eriksen.

And I'm not sure Poch wanted him gone - in fact the reverse I think Poch wanted to keep all the Spurs squad together as he wasn't very good at buying players (Osvaldo at Espanyol and Southampton being the best example).

I have never said we shouldn't change them, but we could have far worse owners, is my point. We have taken a step back as we look to reload and start our next cycle. I think if we make the right additions in the summer we can hit the ground running 20-21, so while this season has been maddening because we are so inconsistent, I think we are going to be fine.
Equally I never argued we couldn't get worse owners. Yeah we shall see. Don't see mourinho & levy as a long term thing so I think we are in for more upheaval.

Funny how those two tweets were announce simultaneously

The OS just has it as the same story

We are delighted to announce that we have exercised the option to convert the loan of Giovani Lo Celso from Real Betis Balompié to a permanent transfer. Gio has signed a contract with the Club until 2025.

The midfielder has produced impressive performances after establishing himself in the team following a hip injury which restricted his playing time in the early part of his loan at the Club.

A former player at Rosario Central and Paris Saint-Germain, Giovani has appeared in 20 games for us so far in all competitions and registered two goals, including netting the first FA Cup goal at our new stadium against Middlesbrough earlier this month.

The Club can also confirm the departure of Christian Eriksen after agreement was reached with FC Internazionale Milano for the Denmark international's transfer.

He made 305 appearances for us following his move from Ajax in August, 2013, and scored 69 times.

We wish Christian well for the future.

Neatly forgetting that there were ZERO offers for him in the summer .... small point but quite relevant don't you think?
Yeah, if DL was asking anything like 80M this summer when anyone interested could get him for 20M in 6 months then why would you expect an offer for him. Would you have offered 80M for him in the summer when you could have gotten him for 20 this January? Again, back to why it should have been the summer before.

If we can get Piatek over the line, having already tied up Lo celso, bergwijn and gedson, it will be a very good jan window. Would love a DM and RB of course but if there's not the right player available, they can wait for the summer.

I disagree. I don't think enic/Levy would care about upsetting the fans by selling key players. They have done so many times over the years. They are very single minded.

That's because we need to prioritise the positions that need strengthening first and people are concerned this will be the last signing of this window which isn't going to be sufficient enough for us to mount a challenge for top four.

Maybe Mourhino has prioritised positions other than DM higher than you do.

And maybe there are no DM;s that Mourhino rates available right now

And maybe Mourhino/Levy like replacing an AM sold (Eriksen) with another AM - espacially when that rare beast a speedy technically good AM who scores goals and creates a lot of assists becomes available.

Also, they are excluding the possibility that levy would have put a stupid high price on Eriksen at any time resulting in us not being able to sell him. Which wouldn't have been surprising at all.
