I'm not very familiar with Holgate's game. Could I get you to elaborate on that?
My guess, he means a centre back who's often deployed as a right back.

Holgate can play right back but like Tanganga, it's easy to tell that is not his natural position.

And Everton wouldn't sit there and say 'we don't need to replace Coleman' because we have Holgate. They are looking at RBs in the summer to upgrade in that department whereas we don't have that sort of good attitude.

Yesterday's game was a perfect example of why he isn't a RB. and btw he's a half decent player who just needs to be used properly. Firstly I'm going to not count the mistake he made for the 1st goal or the sort of mistake. It was simply a sloppy pass and tbh unlike Sanchez it was his only real sloppy pass so that's not going to make or break him.

However.. What i saw yesterday makes me hope that Mourinho will change his mind.

1) He defended far too narrow. It meant that Newcastle's LWB was given the freedom of the pitch because Tanganga kept tucking in. Another problem is that meant when defending players can make late runs in behind him in the box , Joelinton got a chance from this. His positional play is poor because his positional play is like that of a CB.

2) The bigger issue well at least the issue in the future will be his lack of attacking. I believe he made 1 cross in total yesterday and yes he made a few late runs into the box but in reality we had no threat down that side. In fact that was part of the reason why we lost because Newcastle just didn't even need to bother defending down that side. Tanganga didn't get forward and if he beat his man it was on the half way line not on the byline.

Every thing you say here to my mind us fair. But more worrying the issues you raised are clear and overtly coach able. I makes me ask for the umpteenth time what do they do all week.

Kind of reminds me of Danny Rose saying he was only ever taught the positional requirements of Left back by Pochettino.

Japhet has potential he also is a hard worker with heart. Send him on a season long loan to championship team that will play him at CB. He has potential to tap we can't waste anymore of his development time.

It may be coachable to make him a RB but in reality he doesn't have the raw assets of a FB and is that what we really are a club that just coaches specific players for ages... For me that's the cheap option. Just buy a quality RB and let Japhet plays where he plays best.

100% loan him out somewhere next season where he can play CB preferabbly English team.

I think physically he isn’t suited to being a CB. He’s not that big and he’s also prone to switching off on crosses, I prefer him on the right. He’s limited going forward but he’s very strong in duels and there’s nothing wrong with having a more defensive option at RB.

I see him as a bit like Azpilicueta, can play as a CB in a 3 man defence but otherwise better playing as a full back.
That’s fair... all good with a defensive full back with stellar recovery who defends at all costs

centre mid? A whole different story, bad even enough with basic PEH

Completely disagree.

just doesn’t have that 360 vision to play there - still think CB for me, one of his best assets is his last ditch defending/the will to block and stop
It would only work if we had a solid CB pairing behind him as well, I'm thinking along the lines of when Dier played with Toby and Jan behind him.

He wouldn't be able to play there if he had to rely on Sanchez and Dier behind him.

Just feel he is one of our many very one dimensioned specialist. He is strong in one-to-one defending, Sissoko pace, Sanchez pace, Dele clever run. Make too many mistakes in other areas

He has to be included in HG players this season as he is now over 21.
It may have been end of season and players pulling out of challenges but in recent games I have seen him intimidating opponents.
I have high hopes for him but I would rather see him loaned out next season.

Absolutely desperate for us to give this kid a long run at CB.

Not sure what the coaches don't see that most of us do.

A committed, composed and brave young defender keen to impress.

Being Spurs through and through helps.

I really don't know how I feel about this one.

Obviously it means that he isn't in our immediate plans for this season, which seems like a shame considering who would be left behind. If he gets sufficient experience and playing time it could be great for him. My guess is that if we let him out on loan that we feel confident that help is on the way.

A loan isn’t a bad idea because after his bad luck with injuries he really needs to play a full season at a high level. I’m just surprised that a domestic club isn’t interested.

As long as they wanna put him in as a starter, he's probably better off than be over here and not get as much game-time.....

Getting out of the UK bubble too.

My hunch is this is perfect for him.....

Side thought: With Sanchez thought to be on the out too; we're down to Romero (?), Dier & Rodon + Davies but he's been rumoured to be up for sale today too.......

If he goes we clearly need another CB. Davies is not a CB nor should be in any situation that isn't an emergency injury situation or tactical 3 at the back set up.

I wonder who's coming. We're not great at squad management but we're not this bad.

We have numbers as stands.... We just don't know what the gaffers plans are yet.

RB: Serge / Doherty / Tomiyasu (?)
CB: Romero / Dier / Rodon / Davies / Tomiyasu (?)
LB: Reggie / Sess / Davies

...Obviously what that list will look like by the end of he window is TBC.
Davies is not a CB. Full stop.

Tomiyasu might be, but he essentially takes Tanganga's spot if he goes on loan - auxiliary defender who can fill in at CB and RB, and one for the future.

That leaves us with Romero, Dier, and Rodon.

Even assuming Dier is in the plans as a bench CB (yuck), we absolutely need another CB.

If we play 3, he is a CB. I would argue that next to a CB like Romero he has more attributes than Dier or Sanchez to be credible
