Tottenham agree late deal to sign Wales defender Joe Rodon from Swansea City

A graduate of Swansea’s academy, the centre-half had caught the eye of several Premier League clubs

Tottenham have agreed a late deal with Swansea for Joe Rodon and had a race against time to register the transfer.

The Wales centre-back was Jose Mourinho’s only target during the extension for domestic deals and discussions continued late into Deadline Day 2 for Rodon to join Spurs' squad ahead of the EFL transfer deadline.

Rodon’s club valued him at £18 million but talks on the final day of trading in 2020 were based around a compromise.

The 23-year-old is due to complete the formalities of the move including personal terms for him to move to the Premier League after two eye-catching seasons in the Championship.

Mourinho wanted a centre-back having already added Gareth Bale, Carlos Vinicius and Sergio Reguilón over the summer. Bale and Vinicius will support Harry Kane up front, while Reguilon adds competition at left-back.

Rodon’s arrival comes after the club lost Jan Vertonghen over the summer, with Mourinho using Eric Dier and Davinson Sánchez mainly this season. Toby Alderweireld’s only Premier League start was the defeat to Everton on the opening weekend of the campaign.

Spurs looked at South Korea international Kim Min-jae at Beijing Guoan, who were determined to keep the player in China and wanted their valuation paid in full immediately. The cost of landing Inter’s Milan Skriniar meant that deal was never likely to advance.

Rodon is seen as a player with huge potential having already broken into the Wales team on the back of his performances in the Championship. He will be one of three Wales internationals in Mourinho’s squad, along with Ben Davies and Bale.

On the eve of Deadline Day 2, Swansea boss Steve Cooper had insisted his club must get the best price for Rodon for him to invest in his squad. Joel Latibeaudiere is set to join them from Manchester City to give Cooper options at centre-back.

"If we do lose an asset then our supporters will want to see some re-investment and some good players coming in," Cooper said. "What I would say about Joe or any other of our assets - and Joe is right up there as one of our biggest ones - it's really important that if we do end up having to sell, then we get something to show for it."
