From all accounts Fazio isn't the fastest chap around. If that's true then it's not the end of the world so long as his positioning and reading of the game are top notch.

Sounds like he's going to be a monster in set pieces, both attacking and defending.

One odd but probably small point of concern is that by reputation he's always played as a left-sided center-back, which is a position that we can obviously assume Jan will be starting in.

For league games I don't think that Dier was bought with the idea that he'd immediately be in contention for a starting spot at CB. With Walker's long layoff I think that we can all assume that Dier is going to have an extended run at RB and that Yedlin will come in at January for competition, after which I would expect one of Kaboul or Chiriches to be shipped out and Dier is a rotation option and a utility sub from the bench for the remainder of the season.

Dier's in the first 11, he would be very happy about that I bet. reckon he would not have dreamt about the start he has had in the EPL, lucky we signed him.

Bale said as much once that over distance Kaboul was the fastest in the team, but when you're talking about 5, 10, or 15 yards when a nimble little fucker gets behind him and runs on goal, the battle is already lost more often than not. His problem isn't pace, it's acceleration.

Any way you cook it, for a huge CB he's relatively fast.

He's about as athletic as you get.

Naughton was very solid yesterday and if he keeps that up then Walker will have to work to get back in the team by starting off with cup matches. In the long run though it's no contest, Walker is the much better full back and I think he was one of the few players last season who could say they had a very good season.
 
Can't believe he has been out so long, the danger is, of course, that his injury will have an impact on his pace and as that is his main strength, I am concerned that he won't be that great when he finally gets back.

From what I've seen he probably beats Walker even now in terms of his crossing and definitely in terms of pace. I think he's that fast that he can recover from the defensive mishaps you'd expect at that age and he'll probably be more useful to us going forward, especially if we have Lamela on that flank cutting in rather than Lennon.
 
Yedlin has not been very good in the last month or so in the MLS. There is no way he competes for a starting position right away moving from the MLS to the Premier League. He will need time to learn and adapt and probably at least one loan spell before he will sniff the starting XI.
 
Might as well play yedlin on the wing in front of walker and have the world's fastest right side... Counterattacks at its best. Nah i think walker is a far better defender than yedlin due to his experience. He has started to iron out those mistakes which were prevalent a couple of seasons ago. (Liverpool away comes to mind). When is yedlin meant to come over anyway? January or next summer (for you northerners)
