Not only is that not true (the biggest transfers in football have happened overseas) but it's also stupidly unrealistic for him to think that other clubs are going to stop "obsessing" over spending money.

Also, fans and media obsess over big transfers overseas as well, it's just a stupid statement to make imo and shows he has a blind spot in this area.

At the end of the day he is clearly saying here we can't spend money like those clubs and if that's the case then we have to make sure that whoever we do buy is going to be a success and improve our scouting network (the latter of which is the most important aspect of success imo.)

It's not a stupid statement. He's 100% bang on. Transfers have been a part of football forever, yet it is only since the birth of Sky and transfer deadline day that it's been obsessed about and it is well and truly obsessed about and it's getting worse every single year.

This is a recent phenomenon, it wasn't long ago when you found out who you bought once the deal was done and the players were waiving a scarf on the back pages, then the wonderful world of tech hit us and gave us Teletext and premium rate phone lines.

There are many oversea clubs who don't obsess about transfers, in fact it's most clubs. This is because there is no money in their league, especially compared to that of the PL. Only the likes of Juve, Barca, Real, PSG & Bayern get a hard-on over them. Clubs like Ajax expect to lose their best players and it's all about who's coming through or what PL flop they might end up with. There is a discussion but there is no obsession because of whats the point about obsessing over a player that you can't compete with Wolves or Palace on? It the same in the lower leagues, you can't be obsessed about a player you've never heard of from Scunthorpe or wherever.

Only the PL and top clubs is there an obsession and every year that obsession is prooved utterly ridiculous, with each club being linked to well over 100 players with only a small handful, if that actually joining.

It is a stupid statement though because Levy thinks by saying this it's going to change the way clubs operate and make it a more even playing field, it isn't, other clubs don't care what Levy thinks, doesn't matter if he is right or wrong about it, they will keep obsessing over transfers and spending huge sums of money in the pursuit of glory, that's how it is, Levy has to come to terms with that and either join them or find another way to operate which will allow us to compete for trophies without spending vast sums of money.

The beast has been let out of the cage now and the only way it's ever going to stop is if the finances around this league completely collapse, which isn't going to happen anytime soon.

If Levy thinks that football is going to change for us or for him so we can be competitive then he's delusional quite frankly.

I agree with Levy but the context of his argument about obsessions with transfers was directly after a sentence in which he was talking about us spending money on them, he is saying essentially that we won't be joining these clubs spending huge sums of money and that THEY need to stop obsessing over transfers, I don't disagree with him but at the end of the day like I said, if he thinks these clubs will change just because he disagrees with how they operate then he's betting on a losing horse.

We either need to join them or find a way to operate that will allow us to compete for trophies that doesn't rely on huge sums of money.

It's simply an accurate statement of what is the transfer market that exists today. Nothing more than that. The inference is about the fans being obsessed, that much is more than clear.

If anyone wants to continue obsessing about transfers by posting and reading a Jan transfer thread in August then knock yourselves out. If that means anyone thinking we are matching the spending of City, Real, Utd, PSG or that we should be please excuse me for laughing my tits off at those that do.

Exactly, Levy is living on another planet if he thinks otherwise.

We either have to join the clubs doing this to compete for trophies or find a way that doesn't involve spending ludicrous amounts of money that will make us just as competitive.

The latter requires smart astute signings and great scouting (the sort of scouting that got us Dele Alli) but irrespective of that, clubs aren't going to change because Levy wants austerity football, the landscape is what it is and Levy has to accept it even if he dislikes it.
 
What I get from that interview is that Levy is going to keep on doing the same old things, whether we're in the champions league or not. I hope Jose is ready or this, I get the feeling it's like a truce on this forum, on the surface all sweetness and light, underneath there is a volcano ready to blow.
 
Levy looks very old in some of the high resolution pictures I've seen in the last few days.
Fair to say the project has aged him significantly?

He's widely regarded as the worst (or best, depending how you look at it) in the business for extracting exhorbitant, inflated transfer fees from the buying clubs. So he's actually encouraging clubs spending big money more than anyone!

It seems to me that Levy is very keen to get his snout in the trough and take the sky tv billions and scoff all the money cake that comes with the global game today. The only bit he doesn't like is the bit where you need to pump some of those riches back into the football team if you want success on the pitch.

A touch of hypocrisy if you ask me,

Wow... are you saying we should sell our player on the cheap? DL has a list price for all our players and he just doesn't budge much from that... Yep every other club hates dealing with him and that's good for us.

He also has list price for players he wants to buy and doesn't like to go over that too much either... It's common knowledge that all the clubs on the continent stick another 10mil on the sticker prices when EPL clubs come calling.

DL has consistently stated he hates the transfer market and doesn't enjoy the dealings, I hope he keeps his vigour.
 
I'm happy to see the vast majority voted no, for those that didn't I can understand, because it was easy being a spurs fan before ENIC... Just good football to watch and nothing to worry about.

Since ENIC took over we've had much more stress in our lives... Lasagne-Gate, Jolly getting sacked for finishing 5th? Really 5th is awesome! I loved Joll. Chelsea winning the CL and us getting kicked out as only 4 spots..

Each week now and for the last 10 years, results seem to matter, as we all know the basic target is top four... We now have check the table all the time, which never really matter before...

We are on an upward trend, we have the best training facilities in football, one off the best stadiums, a focus on youth (sill waiting to see if that pays off, apart from HK). Financially the club is doing great..

If we keep on the same trajectory, hopefully we will see some silverware...

I think it might also be due to the fact that we havent won anything at all in 2 decades of levy. Lots of hiring and firing and finally he may have stumbled upon 'The winning one'.
 
So. In the space of a few weeks Jose has been out-foxed by the worst manager in the premier league, Ole, and a pie munching novice working under a transfer embargo.
Has Jose lost the plot boys?
Or is Levy's cowardly betrayal of Poch, the team and the fans for 2 of the last 3 transfer windows taking it's toll.

It'll take years to get back where we were. And Levy's recent whining about spending money on players is sounding more ominous than ever.
