With the Louis van Gaal thread in danger of becoming a bit mixed up, I thought it'd be decent to have a thread for this guy as a serious contender.

First of all, Levy might think "who's this fine looking chap?"

Second of all, he's available. For nothing. AVB, as we know, has replaced him at Zenit. When AVB left Spurs, Prandelli was mid contract with Zenit, having been there since 2009 and having signed up for until the end of the 15/16 season (I believe). That would have been a lucrative contract, so we can't discount that he wouldn't have been considered back then.

So, a bit of a fact find to introduce the guy

Name: Luciano Spalletti
Age: 55 years old (born March 7th, 1959)
Nationality: Italian

Background
Played in the Italian leagues as a midfielder, a relatively modest career (mostly Serie B). Started out at Entella, moved to Spezia where he played the majority of his career, had a spell at Viareggio, then played for Empoli, retiring there in '93 aged 34.
He moved through the coaching ranks at Empoli and became head coach around 2 years later. He helped the team to win promotion from Serie C1 to Serie A before moving on in '98, having very short spells at Sampdoria, Venezia, Udinese and Ancona between 1998 and 2003, before returning for a 3 year stint at Udinese.
In his last season at Udinese in 2004/05, he finished 4th in Serie A winning Champions League qualification (good start for us. lol).
He didn't lead the team in the CL though, having been signed up by Roma in 2005 (this was some 2 months after Baldini left Roma as DoF).
Now, Roma at this point were a bit of a screw up and had had a managerial merry-go-round themselves, so he's got previous at wading into a mess.
It didn't work out great in his first half to the season, but in the second half he made the team more attacking, doing what we now know as a 'Mourinho' and decided to not play any recognised strikers at all. They then went on a record 11-consecutive-win streak in the league. That season they finished 5th and lost in the Cup Final, so not a memorable season for those reasons, but due to the court corruption trial (where Juve were binned out of the league etc.) they ended up finishing 2nd in a weird way. Hence, CL football.
He won 'coach of the year' that season.
In 2006/07 they finished 2nd and won both the CoppaItalia, and also losing in the Supercoppa Italiana final to Inter after extra time. They also got to the QF of the CL.
In 2007/08 they finished 2nd again and won both the Supercoppa Italiana and the CoppaItaliana, again reaching the QF of the CL.
2008/09 was a bit of a disappointment, finishing 6th and being runner up of the Supercoppa.
in 09/10 he resigned on 1st Sept after a poor start to the league.
He joined Zenit in December that year, none of which I care about as it's not a real league to me (no offence, André).. at least you can't really judge how decent he was in comparison to the big leagues. for anyone interested, here's the Wikipedia speel:
In December 2009, it was confirmed Spalletti would join Zenit on a three-year deal,[9] replacing interim coach Anatoly Davydov with Italian coaches Daniele Baldini, Marco Domenichini, and Alberto Bartali also joining the Russian club. The Board of Zenit wanted him to return the Russian Premier League title, win the Russian Cup, and go through the group stage of the Champions League in his first year. Zenit won the Russian Cup on 16 May 2010, beating FC Sibir Novosibirsk in the final (having beaten Volga Tver in the quarterfinal and Amkar Perm in the semifinal). After 16 games in the 2010 Premier League, with 12 wins and four draws, under Spalletti Zenit have obtained 40 points. This set a new Russian Premier League record for most points won at that stage of the campaign. In the summer transfer window of 2010, Spalletti made his first signings: forward Aleksandr Bukharov and midfielder Sergei Semak came from Rubin Kazan; defenders Aleksandar Lukovic from Udinese and Bruno Alves from FC Porto. On 25 August 2010, Zenit lost its first game under Spalletti to AJ Auxerre and failed to advance to the Champions League group stage, but Zenit moved on to play in UEFA Europa League. On 3 October 2010, Zenit beat Spartak Nalchik to set another Russian Premier League record for most consecutive games going undefeated, with 21 games since the start of the league season. On 27 October 2010, Zenit suffered its first defeat of the season at the hands of rival club Spartak Moscow, seven games short of finishing the championship undefeated. On 14 November, Zenit won FC Rostov and 2 games prior to the end of the season won the championship title. This champions title became the first in Spalletti's career. Also Zenit went through to the group stage of the UEFA Europa League in first place to the 1/16 stage. In the UEFA Europa League, in the 1/16 stage Zenit beat BSC Young Boys. On 6 March 2011 Zenit won against PFC CSKA Moscow in the Russian Super Cup, it became the third Russian trophy under Spalletti, after that all domestic Russian cups Zenit won under the Italian coach. On 17 March 2011 Zenit lost in UEFA Europa League FC Twente 2–3 aggregate in 1/8 stage. In 2011–12 UEFA Champions League Zenit started in group stage drawn into group G alongside Porto, Shakhtar Donetsk and APOEL. On 6 December 2011 Zenit finished the group stage in second place and for the first time in club's history qualified for the spring knockout phase of Champions League. In the first leg against Benfica, Zenit won 3–2 at home through two goals from Roman Shirokov and one from Sergei Semak. In the second leg Zenit lost 2–0 and was eliminated from the competition. On 9 February Spalletti signed a 3.5 years contract to stay at Zenit until 2015. In April 2012, Zenit won their second straight Russian Championship after beatingDynamo Moscow.[10][11][12] Spalletti was sacked on 10 March 2014.[13]

Has had some long jobs, so not as much of a journey man as AVB, with also a decent mix of team quality and budgets.

Baldini has no real link to the guy as they never worked at Roma at the same time, nor was Lamela, but perhaps an Italian connection might be useful for the three of them to be able to communicate as perhaps the most important men in the club?

It's a reassuring option to be aware of, should Levy not be keen on LVG or if he does go elsewhere.

No guarantees of anything here, just interesting to keep discussions open and separate from Louis van Gaal's thread. No offence intended to the Tim Sherwood team, but it is unfortunately looking like he will be replaced in the summer.

So we're gonna replace the guy who Zenit preferred over this guy, with this guy?

It's the latest dribble, but unlikely.

Remember that AVB also replaced Ancelotti, whom incidentally I would take as manager in a heartbeat. Means not a lot, just that AVB has a good agent I guess...

He will fit in well here then.

To be fair Sir Alex fell out with star players all the time. Sold them, released them, got rid.

AVB would have been fine for it if Soldado had been on form, people wouldn't have cared to an extent. Just the way the game is. Sometimes you get idiot players, sometimes you get idiot managers

And if your chelsea, idiot fans

And if your chelsea, idiot fans

Definitely.

It seems like we do get some "characters" at Spurs though. I'm not sure any respectable manager would have done any different with what is unconfirmed but said to have happened with the likes of BAE, Caulker, Adebayor and co over the years. Redknapp would have blown his lid at Chiriches earlier in the season, whereas Tim laughed it off.

This guy doesn't seem to have any history of falling out with the men upstairs and leaves on relatively good terms, that could appeal to Levy more than someone as wild and animated as van Gaal...?

Apparently he's very highly rated in Italy and was wanted by Inter & someone else.

I'm worried that it'd be a big con, and we'd end up with Ben Kingsley and a terrible italian accent
