This idea of playing VDV as lb because frank liked to convert to 3 at the back in attack seems clever at first, but fails for a couple of reasons at least.

First, the clever and dynamic team would be one that can build up either on the right or left, depending on the opposition, the shape of the game, and even the specific attack progression. Locking yourself into a shape where you cross only from the right side and never your left is sure to be a weakness, not a strength.

Second, Udogie is a fantastic player. You want him and VDV on the pitch at the same time.

Buy another young LB to compete and learn from Udogie. Let Vuskovic compete and learn from Romero and VDV (and figure out which side he prefers since he's this two footed). Let spence compete and learn from Porro. And have a team that attacks at will from all sides and manners of play, to keep the opposition guessing.

That's a healthy team. I have faith Frank understands that too.

Udogie needs to learn his position first before someone learns from him. He’s miles away from being a top player. Hopefully under Frank we will see him improve every aspect of his game. What he won’t be doing is be asked to play inverted which he hasn’t the ability to do. He needs to do the basics of defending well and do them every time with an intensity that was missing last season. What I also saw on Saturday against Reading was him crossing the ball to the opposite side to Porro. I’ve never seen him crossing a ball high and to the back post. He showed that he can do it so here’s hoping there’s more to come from him now.

I still think we're best to line up 352

Perfect for Porro & Udogie and the 3 CBs have got a lovely mix of abilities between them.

Lovely foundation for some proper dominant football.

Closing out games resting ST and putting Vuskovic in at CCB? Will be an awesome and demoralizing (for the oppo) way to shut up shop at the end of games. Play for dead balls situations all day and pound the box.

Couldnt agree more. This isnt FM, you dont put arguably your best CB at LB just because he's a better all round player. If we go to 3 CB's in some games with VDV-Vuskovic-Romero with two wingbacks then thats fine. Udogie was fantastic before his injury, and lets not forget he was frequently caught out of position because of the former manager's insane tactics.

I agree. I’m a massive fan of it it’s done right. Those two are wing backs all day long. It gives you 3 in midfield and 2 strikers. It’s so attacking but can be really solid without the ball. You lose a lot less goals from wide areas playing a back five too. I think we’ll see lots of different formations under Frank and I like that. Our predictability was a massive part of Ange’s downfall.

But then that’s a 5-3-2.

The wide areas are very vulnerable playing 3-5-2.

The moment you push your wing backs ups you are asking your CBs some serious questions.

Stay compact and defend the middle and leave the wide areas? Or cover the wide areas and leave gaps you could drive a bus through in the middle of the pitch?

When you don’t have the ball in our own defensive third you are a back 5! It’s all different when you have the ball and don’t have the ball. You don’t need to send two wing backs on and keep a four while attacking or because you sit with two midfielders one edges over on the side where the wing back goes and you can let the opposite wing back go too. You’ll always have a back four and at least one sitting midfielder.

Sounds more like a 4-1-3-2 then!!

The whole point of 3-5-2 is to push both wing backs up thus creating width on both wings. Hence the 3-5-2. At that point you’re vulnerable at the back.

There’s no perfect formation.

You win in one area of the pitch. You lose in another.

It’s all bollocks anyway. Players are constantly moving in and out of areas of the pitch. If you start to evaluate minute by minute you can play however many formations you want in 90 minutes.

Correct. All formations merge into others while the game is in play. It’s how you play these formations with and without the ball and depending where it is. You don’t have to have two wing backs bombing forward in a 3–5-2. It’s a choice and I’ve seen it done every way possible.

I wouldn’t say Udogie is a fantastic player yet.
