Player Mathys Tel

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

The option to buy after the loan was reportedly £45m, the club paid £30m.

Could be that the club renegotiated with Bayern because his loan period was shit. Bayern didn't want to keep him moping about because he wasn't getting game play there. I can't think of another reason why they would knock a third off the price. We must have initially politely told them to fuck off, so they dropped the price.
And of course we did exactly the right thing using the weakness of the loan period as leverage to reduce the price, the loan-plus-option structure was always favorable to us in allowing us to do that.

But you're right, that structure also allowed us to walk away as well, and when we're at a point of pushing down the price of a player Bayern doesn't want back, what the heck are we doing?

Said it at the time, saying it now, suspect I will be saying it in the future: what we saw during the loan period indicated to me we'd be better off using those resources to find a different player

Clearly the biggest reason why we lost it was lack of quality depth combined with injuries. If we've had Madders and Kulu and Solanke fully fit and available, it would have been different story. I enjoyed first 70-80 minutes. But then with subs we became much-much worse off. I mean, yea, already before subs we started to fall too deep and became bit too passive. So if we've had similar level subs coming from the bench, this could have still been reversed. We didn't, it wasn't.

So clearly it was not 100% Tel's fault. Not even close. But he was shockinly bad when he came on. I honestly do not recall a single right decision. Either it was not tracking back. Not closing down quickly enough. Or was it really-really stupid mistake that gave away free kick. It was ALL pathetic, sorry, it was. I think that as fans we should be able to say that - Tel performance yesterday was horrific and totally unacceptable. That does not mean that we should send him messages or comment on his social media or throw in racist or other personal abuse. But peformance we should be able to comment still.

P.S I was just thinking that in the light of offensive comments... I've commented/messaged exactly ONE player in my life. And it was Moussa Sissoko after CL final in 2019. After seeing us lose, we stayed in the pub and drank shots. And sang "Wake me up before you go go, who needs Bale when we got Sissoko" :D . Message I tried to send him was something along the lines "Aghh, that penalty thing really sucked. But cheer up big fella. It was a good run to the final and things happen!" :D .
I like the Sissoko message. Nice one.

I kind of get your general point about Tel, but I'm not sure I'd go as far as using your language, like "horrific and totally unacceptable". Not trying to "correct" you, but more addressing what would be in the minds, words, and action of the coaches. For sure, they'd go through his mistakes in a sensitive way, but they'd be framing it in terms of how to cope with the big occasion, learning from experience, etc.

Of course, it's not beyond possibility that Frank overestimated the poise of a nervous 20y-old Tel in such a pressure cooker situation. If so, he'll learn from this experience too.

And we couldn't resist a yellow sticker for something we didn't really want.

Bar the internettards -- who are a constant and always will be, projecting the hate they have for themselves onto others -- if Tel had shown any REAL promise since he's been here there would generally be a lot more leeway given from non-thick fans who don't fancy him (both figuratively and literally, as I suspect some who are seemingly memorised by this guy are a bit sweet on him).

He's been consistently poor tho.

We need proper quality in the squad (as last night has highlighted) and can't be messing about with players like this.

Exactly why I was so strongly against him being signed.

Davies' extension and this were just fucking bonkers moves.

Not the kid's fault at all, of course.

He's been put in the middle of it.

Amazing businessman Baldcunt thought he was buying an appreciating asset.

GL with that one, you poisonous little ruiner of hope.

Here's my history of posts on this waster.
This is not some 'omg he missed a penalty' reaction. I think he offers almost nothing and we would have been better off playing our own kids.

funny how you missed out "It's going to take us half a decade to shift this loser" you posted after the pen miss

now was it necessary to throw in the personal insult at the end of calling him a loser? no it wasnt. you could've just said he's not up to it/ he's not going to work out/ he''ll be hard to shift. But nope you had to get the insult in one a 20 year old player for a team you support.
a pretty thin line between garbage posts like that and insults he's been receiving on social media

I posted my messages BEFORE the pen miss. That was after, and consistent with my criticism of him.

He is a loser and I expect it will take us the duration of his contract to fuck him off.
To compare that, being a thin line away from monkey / racist social media messages just shows you to be thick as a pile of pig shit.

Fortunately he didn't come off the bench in Bilbao or we might have lost that too.

It was simply a bad substitution if we’re being honest.

Tel hasn’t shown much since coming over but one thing he has shown is an ability to take on a defender 1v1 out wide driving into the oppositions box.

He is not a forward who can hold up play or dig in defensively and he was never going to get a chance to run at defenders when up 2-0 with 20 min to go against the best team in club football.

Penalty miss, I’m no fan of the run up myself but he did get the keeper diving the total wrong way, just an unfortunate miss.

Over the course of the last 365 days, against wingers in the top 6/7 leagues in Europe , he's in the 56th percentile for take ons. The widespread opinion that he can beat a man is false. All of his metrics are pretty awful. 54th percentile for Xg/a and 7th percentile for shot creating actions.

In short, he's pretty useless.

A particularly odd thing was when he first joined on loan, Postecoglou stated that he will be a Tottenham player after the loan.

This article is dated 5th February this year, but Tel hadn't even kicked a ball in a match, his debut was 6th February in the Carabao Cup semi-final at Anfield.

So the club had made it's mind up before he'd even played a minute.

The 19-year-old has indicated he is happy to stay long-term if Spurs trigger the option and already agreed terms on a six-year deal, though reports in Germany have claimed he could still choose to return to Bayern.
Asked if he was confident that Tel would stay put if Spurs take up their option, Postecoglou said: "He'll be a Tottenham player, mate. He'll be a Tottenham player.
"I think he'll show everyone he's going to be a Tottenham player in the next six months. I didn't bring him here for six months.”

What the hell is going on here?

Ange was gone after he was signed. To be honest, I think it was sunk cost fallacy. A £10m loan fee for a kid for 6 months is crazy, and when they haggled the price down, they probably thought they had to sign him after that.

Only thing that makes an iota of sense.

I call bullshit out when I see it. You on the other hand prioritise protecting your opinion and not being wrong (on a football forum FFS). I couldn't care less if I'm wrong...I don't try a million different manoeuvres to get out of being wrong .

If you can't see that there is a stark difference to how Tel is getting dealt with by the fans then how Gray is then that's on you.

I deal with them the same. They've both been shit but go look at the Gray thread and count how many times his age is used as an excuse to defend him....then compare that to Tel where his age is barely mentioned (in comparison to the Gray thread). I wonder why when they both cost the same and both are the same age...weird that.

Or you can have fans like myself who criticise them equally but also place major relevance on the fact they are 19 and 20 years old.

Literally 0.1% of all professional footballers peak at 19/20.

They have both been bought for their POTENTIAL, of which they both have a lot.

I’m not going to judge either of them too harshly this season or next. But I do want to see them develop.

Uh huh got it thanks for the explanation,

you're a useless sack of shit with zero emotional control running onto a forum to insult one of our young players. If Tel is a loser that must make you one hell of a garbage shit show .
Just own it instead making yourself look more ridiculous stupid

:franklol:

The scapegoating and abuse of this guy is disgusting

Yes he is not showing enough when given a chance but FFS it's only football

The club signed him, Frank is including him. He is going nowhere for at least a year so let's try to forgive and encourage the lad.

You think you are doing something noble jumping to his defence because of the social media shit.

It's like you don't think people should be able to criticise him now because he suffered racial abuse on social media. Any criticism now is a 'thin line' away from posting monkey images directly to him.

It's not making you the good guy you think it is. It's just making you look a prat really.

Well, ANGE had made up his mind before he'd even played a minute, and it was and is very much Ange's nature to always back himself to get the most out of a talented player who hadn't performed at top level. Werner, Gray, Tel, all different flavors of the same story, Ange was always seduced by the idea of unlocking a top talent.

But we sacked Ange, negotiated with Bayern largely during the period between managers, and then signed Tel permanently three days after Frank was hired.

Ange didn’t have final say on any transfer any more than Frank does now

But it looks like both coaches are very encouraged by what they see with Tel, so chances are the Internet experts will end up being wrong about Tel.

Sure, but stereotypically it would be the technical director saying "hey we can sign this super talented player" and the manager replying with "wait, what is the actual functionality of this player for my team tomorrow?" That's the natural push and pull of these things.

But for better or worse taking risks to chase upside is just Ange's nature ("I didn't want to be sat in a rocking chair someday saying I turned down the chance to sign Archie Gray"), plus you definitely get the sense that he was wowed by a talent level he'd never previously had access to.

But obviously under the circumstances Tel is a player Lange really likes. We shall see.

There's a vast middle ground between the sickening personal abuse of a player and just being happy they're here.

People are angry because he was useless during his loan and we needed experience in that position, and went with him for a pretty significant fee.

He's not good enough, miles away from being relied upon as a regular player.

Fans are misdirecting their anger at him, as opposed to the club. The club put him in this situation. He needs to go out on loan, get regular minutes in England to a Sunderland or the likes and hopefully he can come good.
