Player Mathys Tel

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I had seen him before (not a lot), but most of the praises came from my old man who’s a Bayern fan (those praises came way before we were linked to him, he kept mentioning Tel all the time last season).

I think at one point he had an excellent goals to minutes ratio for them. But I saw enough of him this season before he joined us to know he was nothing to be excited over.

Not when he's injured and/or out of form he doesn't.

Look.......... Everything that's been said here was said about Maddison for the 2 years before we signed him (albeit with Madz having much better numbers); yet opinion has been hot and cold about him ever since he arrived.

(Also reminds me of how Spurs fans year after year mythisized Isco...... Each year being declared more of a must have; all the while the player continued to tread water and not elevate himself.)

......If one can't be objective when assessing a player; then ultimately how credible is that assessment?

......All the more so when most people still gaslight themselves into claiming he's a winger(*).

That's 2 seasons out of 5 where he's put up numbers that are worthy of the kind of fuss people make of him.

Boring fucking bloke.

I doubt many had even seen him play before and were just expecting him to be quality because he was coming from Bayern Munich.
100% - Completely overhyped. Cut loose by Bayern Munich - Not good enuf - Maybe someday but not worth a 50M transfer fee on the chance that he'll develop. Bayern certainly don't think he'll develop or they wouldn't have offered him out to every team in England.

Bayern didn’t offer him out, they wanted him to stay but the player decided to leave because he wanted to play. We’ve seen players get stuck behind Kane in the rotation before.

Based on what he’s shown for - there is no way Tel is Bayern’s starting striker with or without Kane - Tel can’t start over Solanke.

So Tel’s supporters are saying his best position is on the wing - but Tel couldn’t get game time as a back-up winger at Bayern over Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman.

He’s not nearly good enough for a 50M fee - No way Bayern send him on anything but a straight loan if they thought Tel had real potential.

Honestly, and I could re-post this in every current player thread, given the, er, quality of our coaching and manager, I find it very difficult to properly judge any of our players at the moment...

We haven’t got 60 million to spend on him. He hasn’t shown anywhere near worth paying that. Especially when you have players like Delap going for £30m

You definitely try and negotiate him down a bit.

Delap isn't on the table for us. if the transfer fee is that low he will be getting wage offers we won't match. Expect he ends up at UTD or Newcastle, Liverpool even.

Thing with Tel is he's been rated above the likes of Doue and Ekitike for their entire youth careers and you can see there is something there in the mentality and technical ability. If Ekitike took a step up and Tel ended up at Frankfurt for a season you just know he'd end up out of our range.

If we were sitting here thinking this club really could compete for the top end forwards who are ready now then fine but we aren't... Mbuemo is at Brentford and he's outside our range, that's where Levy's model positions us. IMO if we have a talent like Tel through the door, we don't let him slide because he's taking a while to adapt to the best league in the world.

We don't buy this guy, he 100% ends up world class and we regret it.

I think that's fear over anything we have seen in terms of the bloke's play.

He may heed a smaller.club, less pressure, playing regularly and then who knows.

Decisions must be made and whilst it would be so us if he turned out to be workd class, it's less than more likely in my opinion.

And workd class is by its definition, off the scale on a regular basis.

Wy would we spend £50M on hime if we're not in Europe next season? Mainly depends on who the manager is. Both Tel and Son would benefit from a switch to 2 STs (but would not start together).

I fully appreciate that there's a risk he goes on to become world class elsewhere. But there's also more of a chance he ends up as a dud, or an average player.

60 million is a hell of a lot of money. For that amount of money you can buy PL proven wide attackers.

For example, who would you rather have, Tel for 60 million or someone like Eze for 60 - 70 million? We aren't buying both. Eze would come in and elevate our attack and make us a much better side.

Tel could be years away from ever realising his potential.

What have you seen to make you think he’s any good, as I just can’t see it?

The other red flag (and it’s a massive one for me) is that Bayern seem desperate to push him out the door!

Even the Frankfurt game, first touch or close to, receives under pressure in a situation Son passes backwards but Tel knocks it round the defender and tries to sprint by. The touch was a centimeter out and goes out of play before he can get there. If he is in rhythm and gets to the ball he probably creates a goal chance.

The cross that should have been a corner but got him booked. The rage at the ref for not giving us the corner, that’s the mentality we need. Same mentality took the penalty when offered it.

Against Fulham he was very positive, some really excellent runs.

Against Utd 9 touches in the penalty area, really unlucky not to score in that game.

IMO the mentality and technical ability is there to see if you are prepared to look past our shit season and shit form

We aren’t going to be spending big this summer without a few sales first. We owe £330m in transfers to clubs with a huge chunk payable this year. People need to prepare themselves for us being tight as fuck. Levy virtually spelt it out in his statement.
