Player Mathys Tel

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Not shown anywhere near enough for me to champion his signing. Money, fee/wages could/should be invested elsewhere imo.
Too many people were expecting the finished product at 19 and with only a handful of pro starts. He is raw and was thrown into a diabolically misfiring team most of the time. He was also misused in much the same way Sonny was all season. His best role is coming off the left with a FB overlapping and getting in the box.

The confidence and determination he showed all season even though things weren’t going for him tells me he is a gonna be a player. A lot of 19 year olds would have shrunk and hidden, but he kept going and worked his bollocks off every match.

Think he's got huge potential, like world class potential and he's got the desire to make it u can see that when he plays.

All young players get the slate wiped clean under frank. Ange did not use the majority of our youngsters in a way that suited any of them at all apart from bergvall but that's only because our midfield basically just free-styled and did what they wanted on the most part.

Anges coaching and development of youngster was shocking, great talker yes, terrible development coach.

Udogie.... a young wing back/full back asked to stay much more narrow infield and almost play as a cm/no8. No wonder he hasn't kicked on

Gray..... yes desperate times in defense meant he needed to fill in and he did well. It was clear from day 1 how good this kid is but he just went backwards, moving to rb which he can do but against top flight wingers. Then left totally exposed in midfield in what was the most unorganised midfield I've ever seen. A dm need discipline, structure, and to be able to read the play but this is impossible when we had no structure, no patterns and can't keep the ball for more than 2 passes.

Tel......he's not a winger, 1v1 style. His best work comes from the inside left position and anybody that knew him before he came to us knows that. He has huge potential, great unpredictability, creative, ballsy as hell and he will reach the top if the game. We just need more established quality around to take the pressure off these kids to give them the time they need.

I could go on but I'm stuck at work ha.
I agree. How many games did he even get to play with our best 11 in? Most of the time he was playing with a complete second team who had checked out. Lets see how he looks as an inside forward with actually class creative players aroudn him

We paid €10M for Bergvall who has huge potential - So we should offer Bayern €10M for Tel - On top of the €10M loan fee that’s a total of €20M which is more than a fair price for potential - Double what we paid for Bergvall.

Bayern don’t seem very interested in keeping Tel despite Sane leaving so we should NOT overpay … Plenty of players with potential out there who we can get for a reasonable fee … plenty of potential in our own squad/academy.
Thats not really how football works though is it? Bergvall came from the swedish league and still has significant weaknesses to his game and isnt the messiah everyone on here seems to think he is and was a huge part of the problem as to why we were so exposed a lot of the time.
Tel is coming from Bayern, and is a forward... they always cost more.

That's a fair enough opinion and youre basing that on what u have seen of him so far. Bergvall was an absolute steal at the price we payed.

But I'd be happy to go to 30m tops providing he has an established player ahead of him (eg we sell son and buy eze etc)

This will be interesting for sure I think he's a future star and one day we will really regret it.

One of those players that's hard to sum up but he's just got it.

Tel and moore are the future. Moore needs to be central not left, another ange boo boo.
Yeah, moore is a 10 really, maybe an inside forward, hes definitely not a touchline winger. Hes still a kid with plenty of time to develop and im sure Frank wont shove him out to the right as a touchline wingers as hes not that naive.

Be interesting to see how Odobert kicks on, i thought he looked class before his injuries so I hope he develops now. He didnt seem to really trust his body after the game where he pulled out of the Europa league game with a hamstring strain.

Hes really not. Hes not lightning quick but hes quick.

This might be the worst take ive ever heard. Did you watch any of the last few games? He looked fast.. signifcantly quicker than Kulu.
According to this Kulusevski's top speed is 32.96 kmh

And according to this Tel's is 32.51.

Off the mark acceleration and having that burst of speed is what matters really, not top speed.

My concern with Tel is that he's basically the same age, nationality, and position (in at least where he did play) as Odobert.

People say we overpaid for Odobert at £25m or so, and although he has had injuries he still scored more and added more to the team than Tel IMO. So if Tel is basically a clone of Odobert in those factors, isn't he overpriced at €30m? Especially with loan fees on top. Is it because one was at Bayern and one was at Burnley?

I think signing Tel would clutter up the squad too much unless a few players in that area went, which is where my mind is made up. If you imagine we got £30m back for Richi (which might be a push, considering) then would you swap Richi for Tel.
Just my opinion, but I wouldn't. When Richi is fit, he's excellent - and with Ange gone I think he'll stay fit.

think he looked better than odobert last season. not a high bar to clear but it is what it is

English football fans are obsessed with pace.

Whenever I see it my mind reads it as "pierce", Alan Shearer style. I find that helps.

I think it's just based on tactics. It seems like, in this league, there's always been two types of team: the talented ones, and the no-so talented ones. 'The Crazy Gang' kicking lumps out of your Gascoignes. Over the PL era it developed into the Stoke City teams, with long grass to slow down the ball, everyone behind it and then lump it forwards.

This kind of developed into a very counter-attacking league. Not a million miles off the Conte and Mourinho style, with almost 5-3-2 that was 8-1-1 out of possession, and 3-3-4 in possession. So if your wing backs, wingers, and forwards are too slow, the team goes to hit on the break and the other team have got the defenders back before the attack, so it all congests up again.
Not a million miles off the Ange style of doing things in a way - was never Klopp style with switching the ball to break down the opposition, but more of a "run while they aren't there". I honestly felt like my soul was leaking out of me with AVB, slow tippet-tappety passing to the edge of the box that, by then, had at least 8 or 9 players in it whilst our players seemed to not know how they were supposed to turn possession into a chance (something Fergie, I think, picked up on? "They can have the ball as much as they like, they won't do anything with it" or words to that effect).

In other leagues they just seem to accept that 12 out of 20 teams are just going to be awful and you can just pass right through them

Surprise not many seems to see an improvement in him if a supposedly better coach in Frank could well make him better.

I thought he seems to have quite an elite mentality for someone so young. Still raw definitely but definitely coachable IMO.

Acceleration is quickness

Top speed means nothing if it takes you 20 yards to reach it
