At a cheap price he could be a steal, imv - streets ahead of Kane

He is older than Kane and a very different player. I would rather keep Kane, he is intelligent and strong, a different option up front and a developing prospect. Shaw and
Lallana on the other hand I would offer Southampton the pick of whatever players we are going to sell.

I'd take an experienced coach over Pochettino any day, there wouldn't be much point in sacking AVB if we switched for Pochettino.

Have to disagree, pochettino first of all plays attractive football, he was himself a footballer and a very good footballer unlike avb and he seems to have a good relationship with the players unlike avb did at Chelsea and spurs and better than Tim right now.

He has done a good job at Southampton and his style of play would suit us. It's still a gamble, all managers are but him and de boer would be good fits IMO.

Why does it matter if a manager was a good footballer?

It certainly matters that he played football, can't imagine many top class players being impressed when the manager has never been in their shoes.
Maybe that's not fair but it's just the way I can imagine a lot of players would feel . You right doesn't have to be pele but a Career would help.

Aye okay, so it's more psychological than it is directly linked with the job in hand. Thanks, I just never understood as to why it mattered.

Yeh that's only an opinion of course but I remember hearing ages ago a player talking about how a manager with a good career behind him gets respect in the dressing room, can't remember who it was. Like a general who sends his men into battle, if the troops knew he was a solider it helps but not the be all and end all just helps a bit.

Well not only that, but there are also decades worth of experience, training, understanding someone who had a career will have compared to someone who didnt.

What players do and dont like or respond too, how it feels through a season, what goes through your mind in various situations.

Learning from other coaches, physios...

I understand the experience bit, but recently most of the great players turned managers have been fairly average. Robson, Bruce, Keane, Klinsmann etc. Historically too I can only think of Clough as having a great playing career. I'm probably hugely wrong though. Most of the British managerial greats have not been fantastic footballers.

I can think of a few foreign players turned great managers but no British ones atm.

Its not to say being a player makes a good manager, not at all.
Just to say there is a wealth of experience, knowledge, know-how available to someone who has played compared to someone who hasnt.

I agree. I do find it odd though that inspirational players and captains like Roy Keane and Brian Robson can turn out to be so pony as managers. They can drive their players on as equals but when elevated to manager they lose their mojo.

Fighters, not thinkers. It came to the naturally so they never got into the detail.

Its no surprise to me that the better managers are often the less impressive players, people who had to work at it, pay attention, study...

That deal wouldn't be good for our squad with home grown players. We need to keep Rose and Lennon until other players come through. Dembele is someone we should keep hold of if we're going to play him to his strengths.

We are also very unlikely, it pains me to say it of course, to get Shaw :walkercry:
Appreciated! But I was just speculating/playing devils advocate. If hypothetically this deal was on offer, I for one would take it!

COYS!!

For me EPL experience is a must! Not only for our new manager but any additions on the playing front too!
Therefore realistically there is (for me) only one candidate. Pochettino!

Realistically equates to DL paying out, or more to the point, not paying out, to prize Martinez away from Everton or DL willing to pay Ancelotti's wages. Should he become available. Other than the 3 mentioned, who else (with PL)
experience would you (realistically) choose? For fuck sake,no one say Gullit!

COYS!!
