Michael Dawson hails Tottenham supremo Joe Lewis for turning Spurs into a Premier League superpower

Spurs' centre-back excited for future after meeting billionaire Lewis on his £220million yacht

Michael Dawson says Spurs are getting better all the time

Michael Dawson's eyes light up as he describes his first-ever meeting with the man behind Tottenham’s transformation from also-rans into title contenders.

Chelsea may have Roman Abramovich but Dawson believes billionaire Joe Lewis is turning
Spurs into a top flight superpower to compete alongside their London rivals.

The England centre-back was invited, along with the rest of the Tottenham squad, aboard Lewis’s £220million superyacht in the Bahamas at the start of the summer.

Dawson said: “It was unreal. It was great for someone like me, who has been here a long time now, to actually meet Joe and know what a really nice guy he is. He wants to be successful.

“I think it shows in the transfer market this year.

“We’ve certainly spent some money and made some big-money signings. Some world class players, and that’s only going to improve us.

“I’ve been very fortunate in the eight and a half years I’ve had here to play with some top players, world-class players.

“But I think at this moment in time, the depth and the quality we’ve got certainly has to be the best.

“You look at the squad and like the manager says, he’s got two players in each position. Everyone is fighting to play in the Premier League and everyone can do that.

“You’ve got to perform week in and week out to stay in the team and when the chances do come to be playing – there’s going to be rotation, we know that because you can’t play ever game – you’ve got to perform.”

Spurs have won just three of the last 42 matches against Chelsea in the League.

But they go into today’s mouthwatering, lunchtime dish with the best squad that they have ever possessed in the Premier League.

Tuesday night’s crushing 4-0 Capital One Cup win at Aston Villa made it eight wins out of nine for the north Londoners with 20 goals scored and one conceded.

It all comes after Lewis met with chairman Daniel Levy and boss Andre Villas Boas on that Bahamas trip.

The tycoon - who has an estimated £2.6billion fortune - went on to plot that remarkable £110million contingency plan that sent shockwaves through English football.

Gareth Bale may have ended up at Real Madrid. But Spurs went on to break the transfer record three times with his £86million fee as Paulinho was joined by Roberto Soldado, Erik Lamela, Nacer Chadli, Christian Eriksen, Vlad Chiriches and Etienne Capoue.

Dawson, one of just two players from the Harry Redknapp era who are still regular first-team starters (the other is Kyle Walker), had no idea that the end-of-season jaunt would result in such a remarkable revamp.

He said: “They’ve spent an awful lot of money. We got an awful lot of money for Gareth.”

Asked if Lewis had spoken to the players about his plans, he said: “No, no. There was nothing. But he’s always watching. He knows what goes on. He remembers every game, every little thing.

“We had a game against Jamaica - they were preparing, so the manager and the owner, took us over there [to the Bahamas].

“It was relaxed. A lot of team bonding together, even though a lot have moved on!

“He’s just a normal guy. You could chat to him about anything. He tunes into all the games, he loves it. We just sat there chatting. He made us feel so welcome over there.

“But look at the squad at the start of the season and the depth we’ve got now. We played on Sunday and then on Tuesday, and put a team out to win at Aston Villa and we did that quite comfortably.

“I thought the boys performed well and that just shows the depth that we’ve got – and we need that when we’re going to compete in every competition. There’s no hiding it – we want to win trophies. In every competition, the manager’s going out to win it.”

All the more impressively for Spurs, their stunning start to the season has come at a time many felt would be spent bedding in their new stars.

But Dawson, who is backing PlayStation’s new partnership with the English Schools’ FA that is helping nurture stars of the future, is refusing to get carried away with talk of actually winning the title.

He said: “Ask me at the end of the season. We’ve been together a few months, we’ve got big signings, but things can change in a matter of weeks.

“We’ve got a top squad, there’s no hiding it. But we’ve got to perform on a weekly basis, the Man Uniteds, Man City won the league two seasons ago, the Chelseas – they’ve done it for years and been in that top four.

“We’ve had experience of the Champions League and we want to strive to be in that on a yearly basis – that’s our aim.

“We missed out last season and hopefully this season we’ll be back in. We’ll concentrate on what we do and see where it takes us.”

I love Michael Dawson - a true, unsung hero who would go through a brick wall for the team. He is the best candidate for captain and I hope he gets his just reward for his magnificent efforts by lifting up a piece of silver this season.

A fine example to all young footballers. It's a shame that the big brands and marketing machines tend to get behind twats like Wilshere, hart, Rooney etc elevating them to god like levels when there are players like Dawson who kids should really be looking up to

Love the guy. What he lacks in technical ability he makes up for in pure commitment. There is a saying, "Attitude is more important than ability." Daws epitomises this.

I don't really rate him hugely as a player (not that he's mediocre, just not at that top tier), but he is absolutely a top, top man  .

I'm very pleased to have him as a role model for the youngsters at our club, and personally I think captains matter more than we tend to think they do, in the sense of unifying the dressing room, setting the tone of the club (just look t how unprofessional Sunderland are), and helping out the new signings and kids (The Secret Footballer book talks about how the players look to the captain to represent them to the club, and I suspect Daws makes everything so much smoother than a captain like Terry). Here's hoping he stays on in some capacity after retirement, whether that's coaching or ambassador work (Ledley + Daws!).

Not quite. Try Beijing! :D Met a few in the Spurs supporters club out there but didn't stay long enough to really join up, unfortunately. Now that I'm in NY I'm trying to check out NYSpurs, if I could only get up on Sundays without a massive hangover and a sense of deep regret
