Hello everyone,

I hope this is okay to post here – if not, moderators please move or delete as appropriate.

I’m part of a team at the University of Sheffield, led by Dr Chris
Stride. We've published a number of academic papers and magazine
articles relating to football history, on subjects such as statues and
replica shirts (see, for example sportingstatues.com, and
https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/17460263.2019.1578255).

Our current project is investigating the music that football teams have
run or walked out of the tunnel to over the years.

We are looking for the music that Tottenham have run out to for as
many seasons in the past as you can recall. We are simply interested in
the title of the song, the artist who recorded it, and for which seasons
Tottenham ran out to this. Any help you can give us to
piece together the different songs that your club has run out to would
be hugely appreciated.

If you have any personal anecdotes around the reasons for the songs
being used, or the changes between them, that would also be fantastic.

I should also add that we are not interested in goal music, or a song
that is played at the final whistle, but just the song that is on the
tannoy system as the players enter the field.

If you think someone else may be able to help, or you have any
questions, please let us know! We would be very happy to discuss the
project.

Thanks for your time,

Joe Headland

McNamara's Band...
Chas'n'Dave (Glory-Glory Hallelujah)
Some random incidental Star Wars music...

In that order!

I know which ones I prefer!!

Duel of the Fates is the Star Wars one.

They tried Can't Smile Wihout You (Manilow) for a grand total of one game as well. Can't recall if that was at the tail end of last season or the start of this one.

So Star Wars first half & Macnamara's Band second half. Random.

Yeah I remember a midweek game, against Newcastle I think, and was like 'what is this shit?'
I was very young at the time but have always remembered hearing this dreadful music when there was a goal for a while

Wondered if I had imagined it or something

No offence, but what's the point of this research?

I think Can't Smile Without You was either the game v Palace (the first game on the New Lane) or the home leg v City in the Champions League. Pretty sure it was last season and we ditched it because most didn't know the lyrics of the song, which is a stupid reason. Would much rather prefer that than the Star Wars nonsense that we have.

Nof that it's relevant, but CSWY is what I set my alarm to.

Thank you for commenting and sharing your recollections, it's much appreciated.

Does anyone know the particular version of McNamara's Band that's currently used?

For those wondering what the point of the research is (a fair question!), we're interested in the what and when (so preserving the music used, noting when it was changed) and also the why - we're keen to see how changes in style, type of music used relate to a club's status, wider music fashions, the wider fashionability of football, how clubs have attempted to commodify the match going experience, the balance of localism and globalisation.

I should also add that this is no one's day job - we're doing this because we love football, and are curious about the culture and history of the game, and what it can say about wider society.

Cheers
