At what point do you start considering that Ashley is sensitive about his curves and is just trying to get back at the Newcastle fans?
I think whoever was appointed manager this summer would have to get off to a really good start to the season as the fans are still very sore over losing Benitez.
Assuming Bruce takes it and they then have a poor start to their campaign, the ex Sundeland manager will will be ducking for cover alongside Ashley.

The plot thickens...

The Club is disappointed to learn via public statement issued by Newcastle United that it has appointed former Sheffield Wednesday staff Steve Bruce, Steve Agnew and Steve Clemence.

Regardless of the fact that the staff resigned from their positions with the Club on Monday, there remains outstanding legal issues to be resolved between the club and the staff and Newcastle United. The Club is currently considering its position and taking the appropriate legal advice.

No further comment will be made by the Club concerning this matter.

When you get an opportunity to bring in someone the caliber of Bruce its worth the possible ramifications.

According to this Bruce could be given quite a bit to spend......why wasn't Rafa ??

I think that there's a pretty decent chance that the answer is one of these two.

Rafa was offered the same transfer funds, but wanted more than that, and possibly other promises on the club's development, plus a wage hike for himself, before staying on.

Or. Ashley knew/felt that Rafa could keep them in the PL once again on a shoestring. Which is all Ashley wants it would seem, in order to keep getting his company exposure and protect his investment until he can sell. Bruce might need a bit more help to succeed at keeping them up.
