It's because our league form has been so bad compared to the other trophy winners. Crystal Palace are the next lowest trophy winner in the PL and they're 15 points ahead of us and mid table.
And finishing anywhere between 8th and 12th is normal for Palace so they by all accounts had a good season.
Had we finished 6th and won the EL we would be saying the same thing. Hell, we would be saying the same thing if we finished 8th.
If Newcastle get Mbuemo and Gheuhi they are going to have quite a team.

Annoying that most of their business are pretty smart signings that really improve the team. They are not just throwing around a shitload of money. Isak being a prime example.
Well we finished 8th when we won it in 1984, and finished 4th when we reached the CL final in 2019. So I don't see why we had to compromise our league form this time around.

I'd argue that it is okay to sacrifice some league form to win a separate competition. Like say that we had finished 10th or 11th this season. Completely tanking it isn't sacrificing it at all.
Probably rest players for key matches in the knock out stage, I think that would have been four matches, so should only be 12 points behind our expected finish (if we lost all four of those PL matches) say 5th, so perhaps 54 points this season. 12 off of Newcastle's 66pts in 5th. So ought to have been around 11th in the PL this season at worst.
