The good news just keeps coming this week.

I'd imagine the new contract is just the prelude to a loan being announced - with Reguilon coming and Davies still here chances of him playing go down, although still think he might play a part in the 2 League cup ties coming up where we may well be playing both an EL and LC match midweek for 2 weeks so will need a lot of player rotation.

A loan to a Championship or League 1 club should give him good experience so that if Real Madrid exercise their buy back option Cirkin might be experienced enough to be a back up option at LB in Spurs the first team.

I think the fact we've (almost) got Bale in actually allows us more flexibility with our back up to Kane. Now we have more depth on the wings we can easily stick Son/Lucas up there and have Bergwijn start. Still definitely need somebody though, but I actually think we could get away with getting Deeney now (last resort of course) and I also think the backlash wouldn't be as bad considering the window we would have had.

No one > Cunt Thug Deeney

The squad has been strengthened significantly this Transfer Window with 4 new 'first team' players .

With the number of games we might have this season our 'first team' might only start in 40% of the games we play (even if all fit) whilst in the other 60% of games the side might have anywhere from none of the first team (in some domestic cup matches) to many of the first team with the other places in the team taken up by tyhe 'non first team' players or youngsters - a real mix and match situation.

So here's our possible first XI with alternative players in brackets - assuming we still sign a new striker, and Rose has left :

Lloris (Hart)
Doherty (Aurier) - Sanchez (Tanganga) - Alderweireld (Dier) - Reguilon (Davies)
Hojbjerg (Sissoko) - Lo Celso (Winks)
Bale (Moura) - Dele (Ndombele) - Son (Bergwijn)
Kane (New Striker)

Those 22 players, categorised by UEFA would be :
Club Trained - 3 ( Kane, Bale, Winks)
Other Assoc Trained 3 (Hart, Doherty, Dele)
Overseas Trained 15 (Lloris, Aurier, Sanchez, Alderweireld, Dier, Reguilon, Davies, Hojbjerg, Sissoko, Lo Celso, Lucas, Ndombele, Son, Bergwijn, New Striker)
Under 21 1 (Tanganga)
Total Players 22

Which allows us enough room in the squad to include a 3rd GK (Gazanigga - overseas trained) and Lamela (Overseas trained) and Sessegnon (Other Association trained).

Total Number of players in above squad = 25 (including u21 Tanganga, but excluding other u21's such as Cirkin, White and Bowden who might feature in early League Cup games for example.

Which leaves no places for - Foyth, Gedson, Clarke, all of whom might be loaned out, or Foyth sold and Gedson loan cancelled.

Might still need another player or two to leave if more than the alternative striker joins.

Now Bale and Reguilon announced, time to consider other possible changes to the squad :

1. Cameron Carter- Vickers was on the bench in the EL match against Plovdiv - and if he stayed he could take the 4th available Cub Trained place (with Kane, Winks and Bale) to be our 5th CB (after Alderweireld, Dier, Sanchez, Tangaga) who can also play as a FB, which by itself isn't a bad option as there are no other credible takers for the 4th place (Other than GK's Austin and Whiteman). And if CCV leaves we have only 3 Club Trained players and thus a maximum of 24 on the List A squad for UEFA.

2. A new CB is probably onJM's list, and if CCV is not considered experienced enough at PL level, Kim Min- jae seems to be the prime target : there have been no credible rumours of any HG CB's coming in (and the only HG CB as a possibility I can think of is Tarkowski). Some biggger names such as Dias and Skriniar mentioned but doubt our budget will stretch as little money to come in from sales imo.

However if we do buy him, we need to find a place for him in the squad - there is one 'overseas trained player place spare provided which is currently earmarked for a new striker in OP above.

3. We already need to sell or loan players out - likely Foyth, Gedson Rose and Clarke - and to create an extra space for the new CB I'd imagine the candidates might be Lamela (who seems superfluous if we get not only Bale but also a new striker) or Aurier (who seemed desperate to leave - but we then need to rely on CB's to cover at RB) .............and if we sign Kim Min-jae there is no point in keeping on CCV who would need to leave.

4 An alternate striker is required (although we could arguably survive with Bale, Son, Bergwijn or Moura standing in for Kane.

Lots of candidates - so difficult to oredict who might turn up, If we sign King or Ings (HG players), we might choose to loan out Sessegnon to get more playing time and use his HG spot for King. All other incoming strikers look to be overseas trained, so we will need to sell or loan out a player as detailed in (2) and **(3) above. But a space reserved for the new striker in the squad on OP.

5. A creative CM/alternate DM has also been on some people's lists.

Its possible but not sure moneywise if its doable and equally other than trying to move on Sissoko (who is superfluous if we bring in another CM) I think finding a space in the squad may be too difficult this summer, unless we prioritise this position over a CB..

6 Selling Gazzaniga has also looked a possibility with Hart coming in. However whilst we have 2 excellent GK prospects in Austin and Whiteman, neither have enough experience imo to be a no 3 GK as yet and they would be better if loaned out thios season. All of which means that if we sell Gazzaniga we need to replace him - with the most likely candidates being overseas trained players - sadly Button (who would be Club trained) has just moved from Brighton to join WBA being the other option.

The only change which makes sense to me is buying someone like Onana (Ajax) to be Lloris longer term successor (2 years left on his contract and rumoured to want to wind down in MLS) but Onana has 2 years left on his contract, so will not be cheap. More likely to be next summer's target.

So in summary, still to come :

1 More new players in :
- Striker
- Centre Back
- Creative Central Midfield - possibly a step too far this TW
- Replacement for Gazzaniga GK - possibly a step too far this TW

2. Players to leave either permanantly or on loan or loan cancelled
- Foyth
- Gedson
- Clarke
- Rose
- Lamela or Aurier (if we bring in both a new striker and CB.

GK: Hart in. Gazza out. Whiteman promoted.

RB: Doherty in. KWP already out. Jose has not promoted any RBs from the academy so Aurier may stay unless Tanganga is seen by JM as the back up or maybe Reguilon can play on the right?

LB: Reguilon in. Rose out.

CB: Min-Jae in?? Foyth, CCV out.

DM: Hojbjerg in.

AM: Bale in. Lamela, Gedson out.

Loans: Clarke, Sessegnon.

not many you'd want to replace from our 1 to 11 numbers

been a long time since we can say that eh?

Been looking at who has been in (or not) the squads of the first 4 fixtures :

1. 19 players have been used relatively consistently in those first 4 fixtures (with Hart firmly as 2nd GK having been in all 4 squads) whilst Gazzaniga, Rose, Foyth, Gedson, Clarke, Cirkin, White, Austin and Whiteman are yet to make a squad and Sessegnon and Carter-Vickers have been in the squad once unused - Tanganga (injured) ,and recently signed Reguilon & Bale excluded from this summary.

2. So adding Tanganga, Reguillon and Bale to those 19 players, this is the 'core' 22 man squad that Mourhino looks to be going to rely on - and probably no surprises :

Lloris (Hart)
Doherty (Aurier) - Sanchez (Tanganga) - Alderweireld (Dier) - Reguilon (Davies)
Hojbjerg (Sissoko) - Lo Celso (Winks)
Bale (Moura, Lamela) - Dele (Ndombele) - Son (Bergwijn,)
Kane
Those 22 players, categorised by UEFA would be :
Club Trained - 3 ( Kane, Bale, Winks)
Other Assoc Trained 3 (Hart, Doherty, Dele)
Overseas Trained 15 (Lloris, Aurier, Sanchez, Alderweireld, Dier, Reguilon, Davies, Hojbjerg, Sissoko, Lo Celso, Moura, Lamela Ndombele, Son, Bergwijn, )
Under 21 1 (Tanganga)
Total Players 22

And these are the missing players :

Overseas trained - Gazanigga, Foyth, Gedson (loan)
Other Association Trained - Sessegnon, Clarke
Club Trained - Rose, Carter- Vickers (and Austin & Whiteman)
Under 21's - White, Cirkin

Conclusion

1. I think its clear that Gazanigga, Rose, Foyth and Gedson are not part of JM's core squad so may leave - only uncertainty is over the 3rd GK position - but one or two might be kept if there are no further signings

2 There c ould still be a space for Club Trained Carter-Vickers and 'Other Association trained' Sessegnon or Clarke in the squad, as there is one space free for a Club Trained player and an 'Other Association trained' player however I expect CCV to probably be sold and Sessegnon and Clarke to be loaned out - but any of these might be retained if we sign no other players, just to add numbers to the squad

3 There are 2 'Overseas Trained' player places left invitingly open - possibly for an incoming striker and CB ?

4 The main transfer window closes on 5 October which will be the end of any incomings, but we will use the domestic window (ending 15 October) to loan or sell a couple of players to EFL clubs

Definitely better then what we had last season.

Doherty is an upgrade on KWP - not so much Aurier but the depth is ultimately better.

Hojbjerg is an upgrade on Winks and Sissoko - again, he's pretty ordinary but the depth has improved.

Reguilon and Bale, two signings who have definitely improved their positions.

We could probably have done alot better than Hojbjerg and Doherty but if Jose wanted them and for the price they were, can't really complain.

Doesn't look like time in this window but next summer is where we need to move on Sissoko, Lamela, Lucas and begin to continue to make our depth and squad stronger.

Agree with all that, but I think JM insisted that he get a RB (Aurirer has wanted out for a year, just nobody prepared to pay his fee), and defensively minded cm in before the start of the season, and with that extra constraint Doherty and Hojbjerg are very acceptable players.

Agree with your thoughts on outgoings in future windows - but a lot of decisions on outgoings are also decided on contract length and age, so a few other decisions on replacements and outgoings to be made too :

Contract Termination Dates
2021 Rose CCV (and Gedson loan ends)
2022 Lloris Gazzaniga Aurier Foyth Lamela Hart Austin Whiteman
2023 Alderweireld Son Sissoko Clarke Parrott White Eyoma, Bowden
2024 Kane Dele, Winks, Sanchez Moura, Davies Skipp Dier, Doherty
2025 Ndombele, Lo Celso, Sessegnon, Bergwijn Tanganga, Højbjerg

Squad Age – Dob
1987/88 (33) Lloris, Hart
1989 (31) Alderweireld, Bale, Sissoko
1990 (30) Rose
1992 (28) Gazzaniga, Doherty, Lamela, Son, Moura, Aurier
1993 (27) Davies, Kane
1994 (26) Dier
1995 (25) Hojbjerg,
1996 (24) Winks, Lo Celso, Dele, Sanchez, Reguilon, Ndombele
1997 (23) Bergwijn, Carter-Vickers
1998 (22) Foyth, Whiteman
1999 (21) Gedson, Tanganga, Austin
2000 (20) Sessegnon, Clarke, Skipp,
Other younger players include Parrott, White and Cirkin

Doherty is a major upgrade on both KWP and Aurier, he's been great for Wolves. Give him some time, also he'll play higher up the pitch like Aurier was, so change in tactics from 5 to 4 defenders won't hurt him badly.

This year is going to be unusual in that the season started late condensing the number of matches into a shorter period. Not only do we have a few injury prone players in our squad but we are bound to be hit at some stage by players being out for a failed covid test. Therefore we are more likely to need those players outside the core at some stage.

Agree with the first sentence .

I think we will end up with a slightly bigger squad of established players (no inexperienced Foyth or Gedson making up squad of say 23 players) so probably about 3 extra players to last season. And that will be JM's main way of coping with the condensed season

Question is whether Mourhino will keep youngsters like Sessegnon, White and Cirkin with the first team squad to boost numbers if we hit an injury spell or does he loan them out which will be better for their development.
