We are where we are from poor decisions made after the new stadium was opened, not because of the new stadium.

The stadium was financed by long term loans, not by having a billion quid lying around. Like, I've spent 400k on a flat via a mortgage it's not like I had that 400k to spend on something else.

I always maintained there was nothing wrong with the old whl. All that bollocks enic and people spilled about we needed it to compete was very clearly complete shit.

Cast your mind back season 16/17. Poch has just led us through a season unbeaten at home in all competitions. You have considerable funds with which you can either:

1) Build a state of the art stadium
2) Back the manager to add depth to the best team we have had in decades

So, what's it to be?
 
Maybe if Pochettino had spent £200 odd million or so a bit better than splurging out on the likes of Davinson Sanchez, Aurier, Lucas Moura, Ndombele and Lo Celso, we’d be in a much better place now.

We’re not going to be able to compete with the likes of the two Manchesters or Chelsea but there’s still been plenty of money made available for new players and on the whole it has been spent appallingly over the last 5 years. Bad player recruitment the biggest problem we’ve had for a long time now.

Since the stadium build started in earnest in 2013 in terms of land acquisition and NFL negotiations, that would have been a hell of a trick.

Also, the stadium build basically had nothing to do with our lack of investment 2017-2018. It's not like Levy had a big bag of cash with "STADIUM" written on it in the summer of 2017. Everything was completely debt financed to be converted into long-term bonds. The interest payments in 2016-2018 were basically nothing compared to the huge influx of cash that was coming in through sponsorships and football success.

The stadium build and backing the manager were not mutually exclusive.

It was fucked. Would have to spend 50/100M+ on it which would have given another ten years or so IMO
 
16/17 was the last season at WHL? We were epic that season at home. Fucking brilliant.

But we needed a new stadium. Had Sugar been any good he'd have got it going a lot sooner. We were one of the smallest grounds in Europe, ridiculous for our fanbase size, and an enormous threat to the future of the club for future generations.

I say that as someone who was always fine for tickets at WHL (Paxton Season Ticket Holder)

Pointless question... The wheels were already in motion (we'd already started knocking down part of the stadium by that point!) and there was no magic pot of gold sat waiting to be spent. Most of the money we'd 'saved up' was already allocated to the prelim work and the purchase of additional ground surrounding the old WHL.

Most of the players we've bought since then haven't delivered anyway, so there's nothing to say that spending more that summer would have made a massive difference anyway.

That is anything but guaranteed. City won the league with a record 100 points that year and the year after with 98.... Let's not pretend we couldn't have possibly choked the CL final either.


The time to abandon the stadium project would have been long before the summer of 2017; which would have been folly.

How much have we actually Paid out on the stadium? It’s probably in the reports, I think we borrowed the vast majaority
