He does so much dirty work that Kane is not willing to do… press and make runs into the box. We need to figure out a way to play them both and use each ones strengths.
Yup.

Interesting that Richarlison played down the middle.

Conte now has a lot of new options to explore, and will have learnt loads from that match.

Bringing him on made such a big difference to the intensity im the front line. His touch was off today but he’s big and strong and busy.

World away from the past few seasons

It's not just that but Richarlison actually makes quick and dangerous runs all over the place which opens the game up for other players. As good as Kane is, that's something he doesn't offer as much as someone like a Richarlison. As soon as Rich came on, the game opened up quite a bit with him leading the effort up top.

I came in here to make the same post.

He may not have gotten on the score sheet today but he was our difference maker once he came on. You're right, the runs he makes opened up tons of space for our other players.

Yes, this is the point I've been making for a long time.

We haven't seen another player play up top other than Kane and Llorente, both who are painfully slow. Richarlison offers a completely different dynamic up top and it could be just what we need against certain teams. Son did it too when Kane was out and we had success, making the CL Final among other things. But now, we have a much much better team than 2-4 years ago.

Either we play Kane/Rich both up top, have Kane drop back as a 10, or have Rich start games as a #9 against some select teams. Either way, I'd like to see him leading the frontline for us against certain teams.

Diego Costa was a technically ordinary player, and an absolute psychopath in terms of physicality and shithousery.

Richarlison is technically better than Diego Costa, and not quite as nuts. But from the same mould.

If Conte plans on using him down the middle, to create chaos, then I can see 3-4-3 no longer being our default system.

The 4-2-4 / 4-4-2 would need a lot of work on the training ground, as the chavs' second goal demonstrated.

But with Kane and Richarlison through the middle, Deki, Son and Perisic could all be options in that wide attacking midfield role. With a more orthodox FB behind them.

We shall see.

Conte has his coaching, and thinking, cap on:

You switched to a 4-2-4 at the end, does that suggests you have another plan for matches?

Conte: "Yes, but we have to work. We have to work on this system because the second goal we conceded was because defensively we were very poor. Very poor. If we stayed with three centre backs for sure we wouldn't concede this goal. But this could be a good option for us because we have Richarlison and Harry. Sonny can also be a striker and we have wingers like Sonny, Deki. Also Ivan Perisic and Lucas Moura. And two midfielders. Yeah, we can switch sometimes to play in this new formation but for sure we need to work and have the same knowledge that we have in 3-4-2-1."

Every word Conte said on red card, Tuchel, Chelsea and changing Spurs' tactics

He was a huge positive today, particularly his pressing on the CBs.

Unlike the starting front 3 today, he presses with purpose, not just lazy run up to the opposing player then have him dribble past you pressing. Richarlison’s pressing helped keep the ball on their half a bit more.

Like this a lot. Kane and Richarlison up front is what i want to see. Kane drops back at times but Son and Kulu would be on the front foot all the ti e it could be glorious. Just need the players to understand how to defend in such a setup.!

Richi Laaa and Perisic totally changed the game today (along with Conte's 442 formation tweak)
But surely that's what we've been crying out for all these years.... players who can come off the bench and MAKE a DIFFERENCE... not just make up the numbers!

not every game is gonna go to plan... which is why we've needed a working Plan B for ages... finally, it looks like we might have one!
