Roberto Soldado

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

i agree with sammy that considering we spent 26 mi on a guy supposedly in his prime he has been very dissapointing. But i dont think he has been some sort of rasiak/postiga hybrid and he has shown that he can be a class player and i think he will be if we actually stick with him.

I agree with Sammy when he says that for 26 mil Soldado has been dissapointing but I disagree with his views on just how bad he has been and whether he shoUld be dropped or not.
I think price is largely irrelevant here, mate - that is what we were willing to pay at the time and does not, in my opinion always represent 'true' player value. I think Soldado is a 17-19m player at best.

For example - we sold Berbatov for 31m because he was 'worth' that to us at the time while in reality he was a 20-22m player at best. Same with these players joining the riche-nouvau clubs - i.e. Pastore for 40m, etc.

My point exactly, but apparently because I posted some stats about him having a high number of shots inside the box I'm a Soldado evangelist now.

Soldado has been poor. No doubt about it as far as my own expectations go, I expected him to have a respectable goal tally at this point in the season. I expected to have seen regular, good performances at least. It doesn't matter how much money was forked out to bring him to Spurs.

Reasons? Not trivial to pinpoint. Maybe a combination of: lack of service, learning curve, unsettlement, confidence issues, management, and more perhaps. I'm no expert so I can't be sure.

I know he's a proven professional though, and he's not the only striker in the EPL that's 1) has suffered (or is suffering) a dry patch, and 2) is taking (or has taken) time to come good. So for these reasons I'm still willing to cut him some slack.

How much slack should he be given? I don't know, some strikers have a poor first season then blitz through their second. He's a proven pro but he can't blitz a second season if he's not given the chance. Still, I might be being lenient, as what we may be seeing is the death of a striker's career, or he might just not be cut out for the EPL at Spurs. Whatever all that means.

One thing is for sure, I'm not certain that there's another striker at Spurs who I'd trust with the cold-blooded execution of a penalty kick. You could forgive a striker that's going through a bad spell with having missed at least one in his first season. Not only has this not happened with Soldado, but he's taken his spot-kicks with aplomb.

I agree that prices do get inflated and very often dont show the true value of a player but if you are spending as much as 26 mil on a player you would expect them to do better than soldado has. I agree he is probably a 15 million pound player but if i'm being honest I dont think he has performed to that standard up til now. I am confident he will do given time though

If I'm being honest I often think sammy makes good points and people seem to dismiss his opinion so he tries harder to get that point across and comes across as a bit aggressive. Thats not directed at yourself just in general

Anyone with eyes and a brain can see that he is clearly a very talented footballer and there is also more to his game than goals. However, he has had some some really good chances in the last couple of months that he's totally fluffed so it's natural to be disappointed. The main issue for me is that we took 4 or more transfer windows to finally buy a striker of proven quality but we bought one of a type that aren't suitable to be a lone front man in this league. All the best teams and a lot of the poorer ones have a mobile, strong and often big guy leading the line that can bully defenders and either score goals on their own or bring others into play.

If we never had any intention of using Adebayor then buying soldado just seems like a desperate move to appease the fans in the expectation of bale leaving.

All that said, I've been relatively pleased with soldado's contribution in his first season for or take a couple of games where he's been completely irrelevant. I'm sure we will see him pick up his goalscoring form towards the end of the season and go on to have a successful second season next year

Price tag is not always a true representative of ability - as I've tried to illustrate further up the thread

He's a 17m player give or take and as such as performed reasonably
