The perfect description of Bentancur.
He’s an experienced top level player that Frank rates. He was always going to get an extension.
Could understand an extra year to protect his value, hopefully not a long deal.
I like Bentancur and think he was thrown under the bus last season playing the lone 6 in a chaos system.
But the Palhinha signing should have given Bentancur more freedom to go and effect games, like he used to do under Conte when beside Hojbjerg. But we are not saying that from Bentancur. He's still sitting deep (maybe this is Frank's instruction to have 2 CDMs) and not getting forward and having any major impact on games. He needs to up it. Right now I'd be starting Bergvall and Sarr ahead of him.
All true. But he can still be a serviceable and trusted squad player for us if he gets the extension. Even if the long term future is Sarr or Bergvall starting ahead of him.
If it's a one year extension then fine. The issue is that (aside from Biss) Bent is the only place you'd want to go in our MFs to upgrade. Assuming we need to see where Kulu and Madders can get back over time. We'd still have 8 first team MFs after selling Biss. Which is fine, but doesn't leave much room to bring in an elite 8 (which we need IMO).
To me seems we clearly see right now Bergvall, Sarr and Gray as at least future elite midfielders. So we keep Palh and Bent for 2/3 years as experienced options to cover our current needs, provide some constistency and to let our hopefully future stars grow.
We will bring another elite 6/8 in next season or two only if i.e. we give up on Gray IMO

I find it totally OK to give him an extension, unless it is a 5y one.
If you want to upgrade your team, it should not be about shipping out current crop and bring in new player. Bentancur can do a job. He is not the best CM in the world, but bring in a new #8 and let him outplay Bentancur first. Totally possible he will. And then cash in on Bentancur.
No point of burning bridges before new one is built. Bit like with Ben Davies in defense - we have brought in Dragusin and Danso lately and we have Vuskovic coming through. Extended contract to have long-serving player around, it does not mean he has to be starting games.
So totally fine with that. But also wanting us to improve on the ball-playing-CM department as soon as possible. I would have liked Bissouma out and Paqueta in deals in dying parts of summer window as an example.

You'd be first one here complaining too most likely when he'd leave for a free. How ENIC are bad owners for not getting money for players and whatnot.
Then Frank’s part of the fucking problem.
We’ve a habit of that standard club/squad players get extensions the better ones don’t sign new deals because we can’t keep them hopefully that changes with Van de Ven he’s currently an asset we could build a team around him for years to come.
I haven't noticed any difference.
It's just that the memory of Sissoko has now faded so much that Bentancur no longer looks "good" by comparison.
