Season Analysis

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

At the start of the season we were facing a season away at Wembley and drawn in the CL group of death. The majority here expected us not to make the top 4 or make the knockout rounds of the CL. Well, we won the group of death, look increasingly likely to finish top 4 with a chance to finish as high as 2nd, have made the FA Cup semis with a real chance to win it, haven’t even thought about Woolwich since January, and will most likely be the only London team in the CL next year - when we WILL be in our gorgeous new stadium. I’d say on the whole this season is probably the best Spurs have had since 91. The Cartoon Cup wins of the years between don’t make up for all the other things this team has accomplished that those others never could have. Massively successful year, even if we don’t win the FA Cup. Any other measurement would require pretending we aren’t talking about Spurs here.

At the beginning of the season, if I was told we would make top 4, I would be delighted, but today, i am hoping we make the final and possible win the FA Cup, so of course would be disappointment if we do not win a trophy this season.

If we fail to win the FA Cup and finish below 2nd - would people consider this season a failure?

What are the minimum achievement to define this season as success according to fans?

I've see many debates lately about improving the squad, rotation of players, etc - been wondering last few weeks. Personally, I'd be gutted if a squad this talented goes another season without silverware.

Before the season started, simply solidifying our position in the top 4 would have been a good season considering we don’t have a home ground. That’s does look likely now, but is it still enough?

Regarding the cup, winning it would make this a wonderful season to remember.

So I guess we’re going to end up with a good/decent yet trophyless season, or it’s going to be a year to remember. We’ll see.

It’s all about the FA Cup, this team has to win it. It’s has to end the 27 year wait, it has to realise it’s potential and win silverware. The more seasons that pass where we fail to capitalise on the talent that we have the more scope is for the elite to rebuild ( just look at the difference from this season to last and it will only get worse this summer) and the chance for silverware grows less . And this team won’t last forever, Walker is gone and so soon will be Alderwield and Rose whilst Vertonghen and Dembele are entering the last years of their career. I don’t see how another season without silvware can be considered of anything of real note. This side is too talented to be only rembered by league placings.

You're talking history not one season ....

you make huge assumptions 'the chance for silverware grows less' how does that work then? we go from just 60% of the top five's income to close to 90% next season ... and yet you say our chances go down?

'the elite to rebuild' Woolwich spent 110m, Chelsea 250m, Utd 164m, Dippers 168m this season, it's no guarantee of success ... City are in a different league but even that will change ....

and you ignore the facts 'I don’t see how another season without silverware can be considered of anything of real note' in reality this season we're playing 38 away games? and yet we're still top four with decent CL and FA Cup runs .... not sure any other club could pull that off .... I consider that very note-worthy ... best season since '84

How that becomes 'It’s all about the FA Cup, this team has to win it' that just beggars belief ....

Assuming we keep top 4 status, even with no FA cup win, I'd say we had a great season. Playing away from the Lane, which we had made into a fortress, is a huge challenge that we've now nearly bested. That being said, the team still needs to see it out and secure CL football with mathematic certainty. It ain't over til its over.

if we finish above the scum and chelsea and get Champs league then I think it will be a very successful season. When you add, that it was done away from WHL and its a magnificent achievement - although we won't get any credit for it.

Close to 90% where on earth are you getting that figure from. The reality is that we are the 6 biggest club by revenue and will remain the 6th biggest club by revenue. Our capacity cannot be compared to City and Chelsea because their revenue streams are largely irrelevant given their benefactors. And the notion that we will have a comparable revenue stream to United is laughable. Put it this way if what you say is true then we should expect market movement on the scale of those clubs in the summer right? If our capacity is now similar then why wouldn’t we spend the same hey?

Of course it is a guarantee of success, every major European league had been won by a club with the greatest financial capacity. And the happens on a consistent basis. The aforementioned clubs spent vast sums and the result of that is that City, United and Liverpool find themselves ahead of us in the league whereas this time last season they were behind us by a sizeable margin. And what will happen in the summer? These clubs will spend vast amounts, sums that we cannot so inevitably that is going to erode our capacity to complete.

Playing away? Oh please the team has played in front of an average home crowd of 68,000 in comparison to the previous 36,000. And is had adequate preparation for this given that it played a number of games at that ground the previous season. The thing is you already have your excuses lined up for next season- it will suddenly be about the side settling in the new stadium and will have a continuation of this ‘next season’ mentality. It’s a really telling thing when you think a season consisting of a few cup runs and no silverware is preferable to one where we we actually won a major trophy.

....How that becomes 'It’s all about the FA Cup, this team has to win it' that just beggars belief ....

No what beggars belief is those supporters who are so passive to a club going a decade without silverware, who place no expectations or demands on a side as talented as this.

Hmmmmmm - we're likely to reach 400-450 in the new stadium (and maybe a whole lot more)
1) Manchester United 581.2 (515.3)
2) Real Madrid 579.7 (463.8)
3) Barcelona 557.1 (463.8)
4) Bayern Munich 505.1 (442.7)
5) Manchester City 453.5 (392.6)
6) Woolwich 419 (350.4)
7) PSG 417.8 (389.6)
8) Chelsea 367.8 (334.6)
9) Liverpool 364.5 (302)
10) Juventus 348.6 (253.5)
11) Tottenham 305.6 (209.2)

Hmmm what did Chelsea, Utd, Liverpool, Woolwich win this year? so guaranteed?

Hmmm you don't think teams have raised their game playing at Wembley? seriously?

No mate it's 'fake fans' like you only interested in trophies that are so sad, 91 clubs don't win the EPL every year, 91 don't win the cup ... yet their fans don't all cry like babies ... nor should we

Eriksen player of the year.

No, not at all. 10 months ago we were facing up to the prospect of a season in a cavernous, soulless bowl that was nothing like home, up against some very tough competition. And the consensus as I remember it was that in those circumstances we could regard a top 4 finish as a successful season - and I stand by that. A cup win or a 2nd place finish would be a lovely bonus of course, but this was always going to be a very tough season.

In fact - we've got this thread to look back at to see our pre-season expectations.

From that thread...

Eriksen player of the year.

I know, I know, such a bold left-field selection.

On us this season and as an observation and actually nothing else, I believe only Vertonghen has been above average consistently this season.

So, 2 ways to look at it. One is that we have done well to be in the top 4 as things stand but I would say that to win a title you probably need 3 or 4 players to be in form during a season to prevail.

It is nitpicking but we are talking those small steps to becoming winners and invariably in life it is about consistency of your performance.

Top 4 and a trophy was my goal, but I wouldn't be overly disappointed if we didn't get the FA Cup given our opponents in the semi's and likely the final with Chelsea.
