Transfers Summer 2019 transfer thread

I really like Winks as a player and think he does have and has shown promise as a player. This station to station passing has been bugging me. It has gotten so bad that I'm starting to wonder if it is tactical instruction. To what benefit I will never know but in the CL final he passed up some clear passes to open players only to pass it 3 yards to a player that would then pass to the player Winks' could have eaily passed to initially. but Winks' pass in these instances serve no purpose other than to allow the defense to remain organized but shift 3 yards further up the field. Why even pass it?

How can you be in doubt that it's a tactical instruction?

Look at Eriksen in similar spots. Whether he's been efficient enough this season is open for debate, but that he's got lots of incisive passes in his locker isn't. When he, through game flow or attacking subs, drops into similar positions as the ones Winks holds all the time, Eriksen does exactly the same. It's just how we set up.

More to it than this, but basically when our deepest mid holds the ball, we've typically got both FBs pushed up and the CBs more split than usual. Playing a potentially contended ball would put us in a world of hurt should we lose possession. Once Winks has laid it off with one of those simple passes you hate, he has dictated where and how our point of attack is, and everyone shifts to accomodate. At this point we can better play the contended ball, because everyone with immidiate defensive responsibility, should we lose the ball, will now have shifted their position and we're in a better shape.

Also worth noting that players HAVE been signed and confirmed whilst away at international tournaments

True but that's usually when everything has been settled before the tournament begins.

Many international managers ban agents from meeting with players who are in international camps, although others allow simple things (eg medicals) to take place, they simply do not want players thinking of transfers whilst on international duty.

Doesn't stop clubs negotiating and the agent will usually know whether a bidding club is acceptable to his player, so some progress can be made, but some details will be left until after the tournament when agent and player can meet freely to discuss outstanding matters

Perhaps these passes/patterns are not the same. Perhaps these are instances where even the receiver looks surprised to have received the ball. And perhaps they serve no purpose toward even something as simple as as a deliberate buildup from the back. This ain't Barca 2008. There is no manager instructing players for a 3 yard ball in the middle third.

How can you be so sure they are tactically instructed? Do you believe every pass they make is scripted?

I can see this thread getting a bit tetchy over the next few weeks :

Lo Celso - At Copa America, last match of which is 7 July (but Argentina may be knocked out early). So he wont be signed/announced until possibly after that finishes.

Sessegnon (x 2) - At UEFA Euro u21 tournament, first match in the group stages is 18 June and runs to end of June, so again will not be announced until that tournament is over.

NDomebele's last match for France is on Tuesday 11 June, but question is whether M. Aulas thinks he has exhausted trying to get competing bids to Spurs, he's tried publicly calling for PSG to bid and got onto Real Madrid so far......so just another 100 clubs in Europe for him to try.

Meanwhile Portugal's Bruno Fernandes take on Netherlands today, so still time for lots of bidders to admire him and join ManU, ManCity and allegedly us...….

Plenty going on, but an announcement on incoming players could be a while to go ?

BTW its not unheard of to sign a player but not announce it for a few weeks just to wrong foot other clubs !
If Ndombele and/or Lo Celso happen it’s not going to be until the end of June. The longer it takes the more money Lyon and Betis can try and extract.

Most of the complaints about Winks, Dele and Eriksen this season has been based on tactical instruction and positioning. Our squad issues in midfield and general injuries completely boned several players in terms of offensive output.
