Agree with both of your analyses about what the squad needs. We just need to bear in mind that with another season of no supporters, the financial restraints will be on once again.

This would be my thought process if I were in Levy's shoes:

Aurier (10M) → Lamptey (30M)
Sanchez (25M) → Skriniar (45M)
Sissoko & Lamela (8M) → Skipp (loan return)
Alli (35M) → Sabitzer (32M)
Bale (8M, wage) → Olise (8M)
Lucas (15M) → Sessegnon (loan return)
Vinicius → Weghorst (25M)

~£40M net spend, and I think we'd have improved our team in all departments.

With these transfers you could have 2 decent teams:

Son Kane Lo Celso
Ndombele Hojbjerg Sabitzer
Reguilon Rodon Skriniar Lamptey
Lloris

Bergwijn Weghorst Olise
Winks Skipp
Sessegnon Davies Dier Toby Doherty
Gazza

We need a Van Dijk not another prospect.
Wesley Fofana was just a 'prospect' 5 (or however many) games into this very season before his move from St Etienne to Leicester.

So what I'm saying is, do you see the fault in your logic? Why we hear it utilized by posters transfer window after transfer window I will never know but it is faulty logic. We need good players not merely good players you or any other poster has heard about so you get a false sense of security that they are good. And established 'brand name' players cost brand name money when our chairman likes to shop at poundland on layaway.

And beyond that I have been reliably informed on this board that Sanchez is better than VVD anyway.

I think we absolutely need at least one new winger, preferably two.

Moura, Bergwijn, Lamela provide so little offense and zero creativity. Not one of them are even average passers, maybe Bergwijn. Bale unfortunately looks like he is past it.

Even if all it is is young player that doesn't start I think we need some sort of creativity or help for the attack outside of Son and we get nothing like that from the guys we have.
You have to consider that we have bigger needs at CB, CM/DM, RB and LWF/CF

I am not sure those are bigger needs at all.

And we should be able to solve many of our problems for fairly cheap.

Our lack of creativity and relying on Son/Kane foe offense is a major problem and a big reason is that the third member of our front 3 offers us nothing at all.

They are clearly bigger needs and a quality playmaker and quality CB are unlikely to come cheap.
- the poor CBs forces the backline and midfield to play too deep and makes it diificult to build from the back. A top quality CB will transform the back line and bring some needed organization and stability.
- the lack of a CM playmaker makes it diifult to retain possession and have offensive rythm.
- Neither Aurier nor Doherty can be relied upon as starting RB.
- We need a quality backup that can fill in for both Kane and Son without our goal scotring threat going to zero.
- Need a young GK backup/starter to replace lloris.

Compared to those issues, we still have serviceable options for RW in Bergwijn, Moura and Lamela (and possibly Dele). The creativity we currently lack will be improved with a playmaking CM, which will free up Ndombele and increase possession. Add the lack of funds and typical higher cost of attacking players, and the value proposition becomes very low.

Great post but annoying and depressing in equal measure. There are others, we scouted Maddison at Coventry and Norwich and didnt bother bidding, scouted and were keen on Ben Godfrey but went for the cheaper option in the summer, Godfrey is already looking very good. We dont seem to target players and be pro active, just see how the wind blows and who becomes available. As ever with trying to save money it becomes a false economy as you need to go back into the market again to replace the cheap dud you purchased.

As for incomings i'd like to see us go for Aarons, a top centre back (maybe the guy at Leipzig), Neto and Ings who would be cheap and could probably play with Kane. With Skipp and Sess returning it will be a welcome return to more youth and pace in the team and solves our homegrown issue if the right players leave (Aurier, Sanchez, Sissoko, Lamela, Moura). We also have a big decision on Hugo, new contract or sell.

Where is that energy for the signings we do make?

Sanchez was highly rated when we shelled out 49m on him
Ndombele was on everyone's wishlist
Lo Celso highly rated
Sessengon one of England's best prospects.
Reguilon best LB in La Liga

It's easy to look a a handful of successes and say we missed out on them but in reality we don't know how close we ever got on those deals. We may well have agreed personal terms with Dias (i.e. Mourinho called him up and said join us and he said okay) but we can not compete with City financially so it was dead in the water when they showed up.

We can't just buy all the players as nice as it would be.

We have bought some good players, not doubting that but our conversion rate isn't great when you look at a club like Leicester. We're never going to be a City or Chelsea so need to be lot smarter and more decisive. Its not Dias where we have gone wrong, i know if City come in then thats it. Its targets where we have faffed around like Grealish or others where we have just gone for a cheaper option.
