I'd take him for 30m not the 50+ they will likely demand.

I know his FKs are a selling point, but I just don't see any other point us buying him (even for 30m; which is still a decent chunk of money in the right scout's hands)..... Fans here would want better for our first XI within weeks of him arriving.

Just as well putting our eggs in the Skipp basket and throwing the money at a top level partner for him.

I'd still take Ward-Prowse, for the right money. Tidy player, never injured, always gives 100% and has room to improve still. Oh, and he would also keep Harry away from free-kicks.

I'd be reluctant to even pay 20m.... We have those duties more than covered by Skipp, B'cur & PEH.

For 30m it would be an obvious transfer. HG, best set piece taker in world football, and outside of said set pieces he's tidy enough and one of the hardest workers in the league. He's a better all round package than either of our current starting centre mids, imo.

But they'd demand top class midfielder money, which he isn't. So not really worth the discussion.

I think that would be a decent price for another midfield workhorse to add to the current 3 we have. In possession is he any worse than Hojbjerg?
If we signed him for 30m plus went and got another creative type I think we're pretty well set in CM.
30m buys you a Davinson Sanchez these days (not to say Paratici couldn't find better abroad for the same price).

It's easy to downplay his set-pieces but his quality delivery and free-kick threat gives the team a whole new dimension when trying to break down teams parking the bus.

Still not sold for the above reasons. HG or not we'd be looking to upgrade again in no time and those FKs are useless to us if he can't cement himself as a starter and ends up bench-riding.

Touche.

......£30m can also buy you Kulu or a WB.

Diaz cost £38m.
Bowen cost £20m.

PEH & B'cur cost half that amount.

They're a non-factor if he's on the bench 80% of the time.

You pay a premium for English players. This has always been a thing and always will be a thing, and it's something we will need to suck up in the future. Bowen was a really smart pickup from the championship so 20m was a really big outlay with a high risk of him not making it in a better division.

I'd like us to get Phillips if Leeds go down, and we'd definitely pay over the odds for him. He's a 30m midfielder, we'd pay 45 easily. But that's the price you pay to get good English players.

There have been others too; Olise (£8m), Eze (£16m).... These guys weren't exactly a big secret; just a question of if - as a club - you fit the player's remit of being a stepping stone.

To me the strategy should be to fill the HG quota with young upstarts; rather than expensive older players that will also attract the EPL-proven premium too..... That's two premiums; just doesn't make economic sense as you end up paying virtually double the value of a European equivalent.

(re Bowen/risk: We blew £30m on Sess and peeps were keen enough for us to blow £40m on Aaarons.... 20m for a fwd (who usually cost more) doesn't seem so bad..... We did £17m in pre-Neymar dollar on Jansen!)

Relegation clause is £25m apparently..... Even with Phillips though; he's not the game-changing swiss-army-knife MF we're in need of..... Again, we're just talking nominal variations on what we already have.

Maybe in another year; we might seek to tweak things if PEH or B'cur aren't holding their own, but for now I'm convinced we have bigger priorities.

They were very good pick ups although Eze has dropped off a bit .. Olise was great, annoying we didn't get him.

You supplement that with the odd big signing if it pops up IMO. If a genuinely very good English player is attainable, you go for it and pay a bit extra if necessary. I don't think JWP is that player though.

Yeah I was pro taking the risk on Bowen, just saying he wasn't an example of a cheap signing considering he was a championship player.

Phillips is a significant step up from Hojbjerg and Bentancur, IMO. If he gets back to his pre injury self that is. If he was available for 25m it would be an absolute no brainer to be in for him.

I like Phillips...... I'd rather focus primarily on someone that would run shit to play alongside PEH/Bcur/Skipp/Phillips/JWP though.

Strange one to me.
I can only presume that they plan to play Tierney as a CB or else Hickey is a back-up. I actually think Tierney at LB is one of Woolwich’s few strengths and this seems like a high, unnecessary spend when they have huge holes elsewhere.
Hickey can also play as RB (he's right-footed).
It's hard to tell how he'll turn out but I would not have minded if Spurs went for him.

Think we can do better than Hickey, pretty sure we are keeping Sessegnon & Doherty, we need starters to come in over them which Hickey just isnt

We were linked to Jack Harrison as a left wingback, if Leeds go down he would be a clear upgrade
