Well I'm not going to put an exact percentage on it as I'm not a top-level football scout or coach, that's for those at the club to decide. But after years of fans moaning about us not pushing to the next level let's just keep playing safe and barely upgrading on what we already have.

That's a petulant, strawman response.

Acknowledging the danger of paying 80m for a 20yo CB does not = "only buy cheap dead-certs".

As for suggesting we never take risks....

Lamela, Sanchez, Ndombele, Romero etc.

We have to be measured; expensive duds harm us..... We're not City/Chavs/PSG.

I actually agree with you that I'd rather sign a few players with a genuine chance to come in and transform us than a bunch who might. I'm not at all put off by the Ndombele transfer really, it happens in football, it doesn't mean you give up on big investments.

It's just this particular deal with a player at this stage in his development that would be questionable, imo. If there is a VVD/Alisson type transfer out there ready for us, the club should definitely go for it.
I agree that in general it's better to pay a little premium to get a really good player than "value for money" in our current stage of development as a team.

£80m is a step too far though. You should only bet money you can (mostly) afford to lose.

Yeh I'm not saying it's specifically Gvardiol as I haven't seen enough of him but I still believe this is the approach we should take.

might be our only chance to get this soort of player yes slightly overpriced but it wouldnt feel great seeing him play well for a liverpool or city down the line either

and wonder what could of been

The problem is that even the elite clubs currently feel he's valued too highly. And these clubs can afford to take the hits even more than they can .. some of them are backed by countries. If we spend 80m on a CB and he turns out to be anything less than world class, it's a big blow.

If we sign him, great. It'll be exciting and we'll have to trust the clubs judgement. But if we don't there certainly shouldn't be any 'ffs just put up the money!' stuff because we're not the kind of club that can throw 80m at 20 year old CB's on a whim.

Gvardiol won’t go for 80m.

They paid 16m for him.

I reckon 40m guaranteed and maybe 20-25m in bonuses would probably do it.

That’s if they were open to selling him that is

But you posted and wanked over an article the other day which claimed we were now the financial juggernaut of the Premier League!

Then no - one would risk at buying players for higher prices. Because they all can flop lol.

Of course you cannot say 100%, but I’m 90% sure he’ll be world class in years to come. I watched him play for 100 matches. Top rated young CB in the world.
Money printing clubs can take gambles and recover from it. We can’t.

Easy to say we should take a gamble when you’re hidden behind a keyboard and face no consequences. But people making these decisions are actually responsible for what goes wrong. So if you think taking this gamble is worth it, just remember if you’re wrong, you’re fired.
