I'd take that.

If this was our incoming business I'd be very pleased:

Robertson
Sensei
Van Hecke
Wharton
Savio
Marmoush
Another goal keeper
I like the way you just slipped Wharton in, if only it was that easy 😂. That would be a superb window, and to be fair, one that showed some real intent. Make no mistake this is where we should have had and have needed to have for a long, long time.

Yes.
In fact it has been total dogshit.
What is the point of comparing him against U21? We are not in U21 league.

Tel has had 2255 minutes for us in EPL. Scored 6 goals and provided 3 assists. Goals include penalty against Southampton.
So 5 non penalty goals and 3 assists. Either 9 or 8 goal contributions - that is a goal contribution for every 250 minutes or 281 minutes - whichever you prefer.

So if he plays like this one whole season, every minute of every game it will give you 13,7 goals (or 12,1 if we exclude mentioned penalty) / assists across whole season. Say 8 goals and 6 assists.
As I mentioned, Wilson has scored or assisted once every 154 minutes that is 22,2 goals / assists per full season. Pretty remarkable difference.

One can be "beautiful" and "strike well" and other be a "meh signing" but that is 9 goals from one position more. IF (!) he signs and Tel does not improve. Of course I too hope that younger player will step up his game and start contributing much more and takes the starting winger position for himself. But we cannot just base squad planning on hope without plan B.

The point of comparing to players his age is to look at the potential trajectory if we provide minutes / opportunity. He still has 5y before he peaks.

He was criminally underutilised (and under coached as they all were) by Thomas Frank, as evidenced by his performances under RDZ. To say he was “dogshit” is frankly nonsensical. For example his tenacity won us the Wolves match, his goal against Leeds evidences how lethal he can be from just outside the box - he can do everything Wilson can and more.

He is a better player than Wilson in my view, and if/when he is given regular minutes I’d wager his numbers will improve next season. I would also expect Wilson to return to his mean…about 8 G/A per season over the preceding 3 years.

Why bother?

For insurance reason! I am sure I mentioned the term "insurance" many times.
To literally use him (or someone else like him) as insurance so that when actually young hopefuls like Tel will not improve- then we have alternative. It is as simple as that.

You keep saying "Id rather give the opportunity to someone like Tel" - I agree with that. I would still use him as a starter. And only switch to Wilson if he does not improve. With your view we would not have an alternative. With mine we would have.

Let's look at very pragmatically - you mention "big money" - well first of all I have multiple times said that I would not go for him at any cost. He is currently at 2,8 mil pound / so ~54 thousand per week. He is no Mbappe nor Kane to demand something unrealistic. So I would assuming we would pay him 4,5 mil per year - that is nothing compared to getting so close to relegation last year around (and risking with 250 mil loss). And as someone mentioned that "he would become obsolete soon" - to which I reply - perfect. That would be awesome outcome. Then we can sell/release him to promoted team as soon as that happens. So what. You also claim that "its hard to move him on" - I can't see that happening - who was last HG player capable of scoring and assisting we failed to move on? We even got 35 mil for Johnson this season after he fell down the pecking order...

Your explanation also kind of proves that you did not fully read what I wrote. Where you say "So, we sign Wilson, just for the sake of it apparently, and while Kudus is injured (we assume) Wilson plays = Tel doesnt" which is exactly the opposite what I have repeated - I would give Tel benefit of the doubt and first chance to impress. But only when he still does not deliver the goals and assist - then we would have an alternative.

Again - for maybe 10th time - I am not saying that Wilson would be my dream signing.
I am just using him as an example of hedging bets. I feel that you prefer "all or nothing" approach. Which to me is suicidal on the back of 2 17th place finishes.
I am ONLY promoting such kind of deal to have MORE SPENDING POWER elsewhere and to get more data on the young prospects that we already have on the books. If we are to make final decision on Odobert and Tel based on what we have seen so far - it would be to axe them, feels pretty clear.

As ever with these things, we really arent that far apart - its only the small differences.

I simply dont see the point in buying him "for insurance" - its exactly my point on squad bloat. I dont want it - I want every place to count, not be wasted on "just in case" filler.

Big money is relative. I think he would be hard to move on, because even at £4.5m a year - thats about £86k a week - thats very big money to his likely suitors. Which, in your example, is a newly promoted team. How many of those are coming up and happy to spend £86k a week on a 30 year old winger who has never been anything special? Its a deal we would have to take loses on to make happen, hence I think it would be actually difficult to do (at least, hardly simple/easy)

And Im really not an all or nothing sort of person, its much more that cost/benefit view for me. Over all, holistically, in the wider context of the team/squad, does a deal work or not?

I am not against pragmatic buys at all. I am not against free transfers at all. I think Robertson and Senesi are really good examples of canny business.

I just dont think Wilson is it, at all.

Short - you want to gamble "What if Tel improves" without alternative to fall back on.
I say - "sure, let's gamble. Let's use Tel as a starter in beginning of next season. But lets also buy a cheapish insurance policy".

Also I have absolutely no clue why you keep throwing around terms like "regressing to the mean" like I would be focusing in last season with my numbers. When in fact I am talking about 5 season average.

I think its likely I rate Tel better than you do. And I also think, in a proper RDZ side, Tel would do well for us.

As stated, I dont see any need for insurance players that bloat the squad, a difference we arent going to overcome.

I say regress to the mean, because as best as I can tell, Wilson was hot last season, and bang average the 4 years prior. Hardly playing, for the most part.

Looks like he had a huge impact in getting them promoted, since when he has been a squad player - less starts over 4 years. Then one good season...

...so yes - I dont think last season is the "standard" to hold him to/expect from him

We haven't got enough in midfield.

I think midfield can be worked with/around if the attack and defence are on point

Hard running, good movement, simple passing - RDZ already got that into our lot over 7 games

With a proper front line, how much better might we have done over those games?

Which isnt to say I dont want midfielders, of course Id like to improve there - its just that if its a question of "striker OR midfielder?" Id go striker...

No, I don’t. That why I said “I don’t think Kudus showed enough with us”. But, he didn’t impress me at West Ham either.

And he’s also a guy who believes he’s a number ten, so he’s never going to be at his best on the wing.
Kudus was marked so heavily because no opponent had to worry about us attacking down our left, we presented so little danger there. With a really tricky winger there next year opponents will not be able to tighten up on Kudus so much so we should see even more danger from him.

Says a lot about how fucked our youth development pathway is, if a young player like Kinsky can perform so well and take his chance only to be rewarded by being cast aside for someone as bang average as Chevalier.

No missions.

I don't rate Kudus and on Savinho I saw a promising start to his Ciyy career and then nothing. That should concern everyone

As to who we bring in,no.idea, but what you proposed wouldn't scare any team. Might scare me in truth.

Kudus is gravity player because of his 1v1 ability. Teams are scared of his ability to beat players and change shape when he has the ball.

Another very good 1v1 player in Savio will 100% cause teams problems. The problem for us will be converting that threat into goals

I pray you are correct. I fear you aren’t and we’ve signed another bang average winger, who will give us 10 g/a for the next couple of seasons and then end up at Besiktas.
