Who cares about "statements".....

Only 2 kinds of signing.... Good & bad.
Yep but what I meant by a statement signing is that it hardly tells the rest of football that Spurs mean business if we sign Woolwich rejects. Sign a big name player then it sends a statement to other big names that Spurs are serious and might encourage some of them to sign. Maybe even Kane could be persuaded to stay as well. Sign Guendouzi and it will likely have the opposite effect

I know what "statement signing" implies, but I think our transfer concerns ought to be a lot lot more practical than optics.

I'm far more concerned about our habbit of botching big money trfs, fundamental improvements to the squad and improved coaching than worrying about sending 'messages'.

Manuel Akanji cost Man City just £15 million (summer 2022) and is the sort of player Spurs needed.
I know it's too late now but I wonder why on earth Spurs didn't go for him at that price 🤔 Man City got him relatively late in the transfer window.

5M net is also a lot more than the gross wages, which is how the figures are quoted in England
Reminds me of Ruud Gullit's frustated comment when the chavs lowballed him all those years ago...

-------------------------------------------

"I [chav MD Hutchinson] said to him, `Well Ruud, if you misunderstood, the figure was pounds 1m per year gross. Would you have accepted that?' And he flatly said no. Ruud, who is a master of the media, very craftily said today that he asked for pounds 2m. He did ask for pounds 2m and I immediately responded and said, `Gross?' And he said, `No, netto. I always talk netto.'

Football: Chelsea claim Gullit wanted pounds 3.3m a year

Calm down, Akanji in our defence would be a joke, he doesn't have to defend for 80% of matches for City where as for us...

Calm down. He cost them only £15m and he's played 2 games vs Real M. and looked "solid", so he can't be as shit as you claim him to be...

He cost just £15m, so you can't expect him to be world-class but he looked solid being played out of position (he's a right-footed CB playing as LB) vs Real M. in 2 games now. And he was up against Rodrygo.
Which is more than one can say about most of the Spurs defenders.
I'd still take him at £15m  As an understudy.
