Imagine if just one of those three players lived up to expectation

The thing I look to most is the attempted succession planning of Sanchez/Foyth..... Both were strong prospects at the time...... Imagine if we'd have smoothly transitioned into another era of defensive solidity when Jan/Toby wound down.

The combined 50m was big money back then.

Of course Dembele > Ndombele would have been extremely welcome too.

I do. They seem to be trying to make an example of him. 8 months because of betting on a game of football anytime he fancied is wrong. If it came out that he bet against Brentford then fair enough but I think that won’t be the case.

The potential for corruption doesn't stop there though.

FWIW: Trippier got a 2 1/2 months ban and that a) wasn't him doing the betting, b) wasn't 200+ charges and c) not even betting on the game itself.

Putting all that in perspective, 8 months isn't crazy.

Told fuck all. Betting like what Toney done is not corruption. Not once has it been mentioned that it’s match fixing. You think having an accumulator on is corruption?

If they had the same energy for other types of cheating like PEDs, then this ban wouldn't seem so excessive but it feels politically motivated as well.

Also, maybe he just wasn't using the right bookies because it's not like there aren't known connections between clubs in the prem and big betting syndicates from abroad.

letting Foyth go was probably a mistake.

He'd be super useful now with his ability to play RCB or RB.

Martinez probably shouldn't have been playing during the world cup. Took pain-killing injections to play the first two games I think, then couldn't train much during the tournament until the last two games I think. But yeah, not a super clinical striker even when he is fit tbh, he.. but I think he's been harshly judged on a poor world cup, think he'd be a great signing for Chelsea.

Except they already have Nkunku. Would be bonkers to pay big money for Martinez?

Hasn't proved to be anything more than a squad level player, but was a worthwhile punt none-the-less.

He fits that Romero, Lenglet 'cultured' mold...... What we seem to be struggling with (see Dier/Sanchez/Rodon) is the stoic physical-presence type.

And despite that, We’re still one of the oldest teams in the league.
3rd oldest in the prem. Before next season starts we'd have Lloris 36, Perisic 34, Forster 35, Son 31, Davies 30, Kane 30, Dier 29, Hojbjerg 28, Lenglet 28. Most of our bloody first team. That has to be the slowest team ever assesmbled.

As far as pace goes, few of our young players are quick anyway, so it's not purely a matter of age,

If as assumed Hugo & Lenglet leave and Perisic is demoted by Udogie that starting XI average age immediately drops significantly. If Forster, Davies & PEH drop to the bench as expected it drops even further. Lucas (30) is off too....

One the flipside:

Emerson
Porro
Romero
Udogie
Sess
Skipp
Sarr
Bentancur
Biss
Kulu
Gil

All 25 or under.

26: Dav, Rich, Danjuma (gone)

Thiago Silva & Milner have been testament to the fact that if the player isn't reliant upon pace then 30 y/o is no big deal.

As above; the avg age of the squad will drop without much effort... We very rarely sign older players anyway; so we needn't panic and instill an U24s only policy.

It’s similar to insider trading. You are potentially able to influence the things you are betting on.

Gambling is also addictive so even if we’re happy with betting on some games, there needs to be a clear line set on acceptability. The only real way to do that is - you want to be a pro footballer… then you can’t bet on games. Wait until you retire.
