I think an experienced midfielder could really help this team.

Only Bentancur from our midfielders has consistently played at a higher level than we have achieved.

This is currently the highest level the likes of Bissouma, Sarr, PEH, Skipp and lo celso have played. Could add Maddison in that but he is an attacking player.

We have talent there but could definitely add better experience

I got a strange feeling we might sell Bissouma. Can raise funds and he’s pretty unreliable now with injuries and form. Would be a surprise to some though.

He’s a complete forward. You don’t see many CFs like him these days. Gyokeres has a killer finish on him, can dribble, carry, and isn’t afraid of duels. He’s also world class at holding it up, he has great strength
Gyokeres is playing in a pub league, before then he was playing in the Championship. Referring to any aspect of his game as "world class" is insane.

He might be a very good player, but he is unproven at the top level. What makes a good forward in Portugal doesn't necessarily translate to the Premier League, just look at Carlos Vinicius. Scored 24 goals in a season for Benfica, then looked totally out of his depth at Spurs.

The hype around Gyokeres needs to cool.

Pub league is incredibly harsh on the Portuguese league.

Ronaldo, Ruben Dias, Bruno Fernandes, Ederson, Ramires, Raul Jiminez.. They've all come from Portugal league and settled very well in the Premier League, if anything it's the ultimate proving ground for our league.

Also, Gyokeres isn't only doing it in the league, he's been scoring in Europa as well. As for the championship, we are we acting like it's a shit league? Some of the most exciting players have come from the Championship.

Okay, apologies for the long one and yeah, I know...it ain't Football Manager, Levy never gonna sign off on that many Ins & Outs, what crack am I on etc etc.

But say we're really serious about challenging and winning stuff, as the big fella keeps banging on about...well let's be real, we ain't just one or two players short. No way. This season has proved it (yet again).

My opinion and my opinion only, but this is where I think we're at re summer biz required. Priority signings in red.

2024/25 Squad

GK: Vic - Newbie - Frase

RB: Newbie - Porro
RCB: Cuti - Radu
LCB: Micky - Newbie
LB: Udo - Newbie

DM: Newbie - Skippy
CM: Sarr - Roddy
AM: Madders - Newbie

RW: Johnson - Newbie
LW: Newbie - Newbie

ST: Sonny - Richy

Utility men: Davies, Kulu

That makes it a 25-man squad, knowing we can recall loans or integrate Academy kids if need be.

Some of them 9 signings must be English cause we're getting desperately short of them...we're an English club playing in the English Premier League...

**************************************************
Loan w/o option: Ashley, Bergvall, Donley, Devine, one or two of our starlet forwards (Moore, Jude, Lankshear...)
Loan with option or oblig: Yago, Scarlett, Veliz
**************************************************
Sell: Emerson, Spence, Tanganga, Rodon, Sessegnon, Reguilon, Hojbjerg, Bissouma, Lo Celso, Gil, Solomon, Parrott...unfortunately nobody will buy the fat cunt so another loan for him
*************************************************

Good effort on the post formatting and I agree with almost everything, mate.

I do think Bergvall may just be that different type of that forces his way into the picture. Devine probably needs another loan for sure though, hopefully in the prem. Donley maybe straight to a prem loan if we can.

I might be tempted to swap Emerson and Davies as the utility men just because Davies is getting on in age so keeping him around ends up giving you another job sooner. Plus we could in theory sign a leftie that can cover inverted LB and LCB (bigger ask than it sounds though).

But for sure, if we are serious about really competing we need those in red this summer.

Agree!

But who is this Newbie fella, Scottish??
Must be world class with that versatility!

:andros:

The reality is that “world class” players are players like Osimhen and L Martinez.

If you want either, you’re not even getting close to them unless you’re prepared to spend £100m+.

Levy never will. His transfer strategy simply won’t allow us to get those players. We’re always going to be hoping that a player with potential can grow into a top quality player. That means taking punts on players like Brennan Johnson and having to be prepared for them to flop.

The best we can hope for is that FFP creates pressure on other clubs in the same market as us which enables us to squeeze a bit more value out of players.

We definitely need a striker and a RW at a minimum. That’ll give us Kulusevski as back up for RW and AM. Son needs to be our starting LW with Johnson/Solomon as cover with a new striker (goalscorer) brought in to compete with Richarlison.

I doubt we’ll be doing anything in the midfield department. I imagine Lo Celso and Højbjerg will move on, with Bergvall coming in. That gives us Sarr, Bentancur, Bissouma, Skipp and Bergvall with Donley & Devine on the fringes too. Maddison, Kulusevski and Bergvall are all able to play AM. We have a lot of depth there, I just can’t see us doing anything even though there’s no KDB/Modric type player there (which would be nice).
We need at least 1 high quality defensive midfielder.

If you seriously want to challenge, you can't go with Biss and Skippy.

Yeah you may be right. The kid may well be able to provide cover at the 8 or 10 the moment he lands. He'll defo get pre-season to show what he's got. But for his development I still think it'd be best for him to play week in week out, which he likely would at a Fulham or Palace type...and for sure at a Swansea, QPR...

Devine probably needs another loan for sure though, hopefully in the prem. Donley maybe straight to a prem loan if we can.
My opinion only, but I think they're both miles off being PL ready, even as bench options. Send them to Boro under Carrick, or Luton if they go back down.

To be honest I like Emerson and only reason I said sell him is so we raise some cash plus free up a roster spot. But may as well keep him and Big Ben...both proper club guys and with European comps next year (and likely more injuries/suspensions), they'll get mins.

But for sure, if we are serious about really competing we need those in red this summer.
Only reason it looks like a lot of business to be done in one window, both ins & outs...is cause we're still paying the price of years of insufficient/dumb activity.

But a club of our stature, with our finances + facilities + London appeal should be able to bring in 3 new starters of CL pedigree + 3 or 4 solid rotation pieces without any issue.

Re outs, apart from Ndombele (huge wages & a lazy thundercunt) and Sessegnon (man's a hospital bed), we should be able to ship all that deadwood out. Take the hit on Spence, Reggy, Lo Celso...and just move the eff on.

Does Ange buy experienced players?
The club have a structure now where we seem to be in the market for younger players which is great and will hopefully bring success and stability in the future but we need top players that have experience to help these guys that can get us through nights like Saturday. Sonny is skipper because he’s great professional and a good person but we need more that are consistent and can lead when we are not playing well. Romero and VDV are leaders but there needs to be more. As soon as we go for an experienced type then it will get frowned upon saying he’s too old though!!

I'm surprised in that I feel as uneasy about the midfield as I do at this point in the season. Seeing what Fulham did Sunday drew a line under that feeling and put an exclamation point at the end of it.

We have 5 or 6 pretty good midfield players. Sarr is young and will be a very good player for years. Biss talented but kinda flaky and needs the opposition to play a certain way for him to be at his best. Hojbjerg good squad player, probably gone soon. Maddison, super talented nearly really great player, injury prone, struggling to find his level after 2/3 injuries. Bentancur, good player, very good at times, not quite top level, plus a bad knee injury.

We have a midfield good enough to be 4th / 5th every year, need a top 6 and an adequate Maddison alternative. Hopefully Bentacur can find his form / adjust to this style of play for next season.

Or it was just a one off and a bad day at the office consisting of players out of form and carrying a knock or two.

That same midfield pretty much went toe to toe with the team top of the Premier League and came out of it unscathed.
