Agree with this. I'd have preferred Williams or Olise but what you going to do. Chiesa is 26. Yes it is a bit of a punt and is a bit opportunistic but if he does well you have a top level player probably worth £50m. Its a gamble but most signings are. I always felt it had the potential to be a Van Der Vaart signing and would have been happy with him signing when we were first linked.
If he doesn’t do well you are stuck with him on huge wages and nobody wants him.

A month ago, people were laughing at the clubs recruitment strategy when there were links of Chiesa to Spurs. Calling it typical Spurs that we would end up with a "past-it" injury prone winger because he would cost us peanuts instead of going and signing "a game changer"

Are we suddenly going to pretend that wasn't the case because Liverpool are now on course to sign him?
Complete bollocks.

A simple forum search for Chiesa will show there were plenty on here that were up for signing him when he was first mentioned.

Of course it's a risk. Chelsea have taken a risk on Neto and Liverpool on Chiesa but if it pays off they have two great players in their squad that are better than any wingers we currently have.

To Dare is To Do 'n all that.

Conte was and is obviously an excellent coach, but to say he was the sole reason they beat us to the league that season just doesn’t stack up.

If the quality of the player available to him wasn’t the difference, then how come he couldn’t win the league with us? Or even come close to it?

15/16 & 16/17 saw Liverpool, City, United and Woolwich all crap. Chelsea were crap in 15/16

Somehow Woolwich still finished above us in 15/16 though

By the time Conte came to Spurs, Woolwich, Liverpool and City had all got better. United even had a decent season IIRC?

I wouldn't trade Neto or Chiesa for Son. If you would you are off your rocker.

Not interested in age or potential in this debate either because I wouldn't trade the potential Odobert and Moore have for either of them either. On current ability, nobody with half a football brain is trading Son for Neto or Chiesa.

In what world are either Chiesa or Neto better than Son?

They are also paying him above £200K a week

Sorry mate, I didn't realise every reaction had to be accompanied with an explanation, sort of defeats the purpose but for you boss, I'll give you one.

Everyone bar United in the top 8 outscored us last season, and everyone, again bar United, had a better goal difference. Your response when another poster pointed out his worry we haven't done all we can to close that gap was to mention Richarlison and Johnson's goals per minute numbers hence the disagree.

As for the pish about passive aggressiveness and being stalked, do grow up.

My response was specifically in response to another poster saying we have wasted money on attackers.

Also, our terrible goal difference was largely down to defensive issues.

We needed to score more goals too, don't get me wrong, but if it's goal difference you're concerned about then conceding less is where our focus should be.

Let me explain why I really do mean waste of money when discussing Richy/Johnno. Double spending.

To illustrate my point, let’s look at three really good transfers and examples of great recruitment: Romero Porro and VDV. each of these players were bought for high fees, £40m+, but with that comes the requisite quality. These players are pretty much penciled in on the team sheet and locks to start every match. Not perfect players, but everyone agrees they’re key parts of our foundation moving forward and, more importantly, it will be hard to upgrade upon them in the market.

As a result, we don’t need to buy a new CB to replace Romero or VDV because they didn’t work out.

let’s compare and contrast with £60m Richy and £50m Johnno - basically after only one season, the club and manager decided that we need to spend big on a new striker and a new winger, specifically RW. While Neto didn’t come off, Odobert did and it’s clear from Ange’s comments that he wants a RW upgrade. As for Richy, we did however spend £65m on Solanke, which is a sign the club did not trust Richy to be that foundational striker piece.

Do you see the difference? Our defenders are foundational, hard to upgrade, and penciled in - key parts of our future. Johnno and Richy on the other hand have been immediately targeted as positions we need to upgrade despite spending that money.

What this does is necessitates situations where we’re DOUBLE spending on a position so now our striker outlay is £120m between Dom/ Richy and our winger outlay is in the hundred million range because we had to immediately get an upgrade on Johnson. That is why it’s a waste of money. Look I know not every transfer will be a hit but with our chairman’s financial limitations, we really cannot afford to be missing on £50/60m transfers. And unfortunately we’ve done just that.

You say upgrade, I say get competition for.

You're also continuously dismissing the fact that their output in terms of goals and assists last season showed value for the money spent.

Either way, it clearly didn't stop us spending as we just spent a fuck load on players to compete with them for places.

Tbf, and I say this as someone who was and is iffy on Chiesa, I think that a lot of the consternation was about bringing him in as the statement signing and long term solution at RW. That would be a risk.

Bringing him in for peanuts to rotate with what is already a healthy, proven winger group is a different situation and that’s why it’s a good move for Liverpool. He’s essentially the Timo Werner of their squad and I think we all know which of the two is better.

Neto would be absolute great succession planning for Son at 24 years old.

The geezer is 32 you can't just bury your head in the sand. I think Son's decline will be very swift and brutal once it comes and we should be preparing for that.

Nah, let's wait for it to be a problem first and THEN respond.

Some of the comments on here, they're either forcing themselves to be this positive or they've been on the Levy/ENIC Kool-Aid all summer and forgot to share.
