I disagree it's not just about rest and recovery it's about competition as well , Udogie needs someone to legit threaten his spot, that's generally how some players improve because they know they can rest on their laurels.

I agree that in ideal life you'd have legit competition.

But how the fuck does it come BEFORE having the very starting XI strenghthened, I cannot follow at all.
Our winger department is still subpar - between Son, Johnson, Odobert, Werner + potentially Kulusevski and Moore we have... what - 1 player that could potentially be suitable winger for this system. And he is 19 yo who has had one game for us.

And for #6 we have player who started last season with 7 flawless games that were followed by constant rotation of average games, totally soft performances and straight out absence.

Yet we are talking about "finding competition" for brilliant starting LB.

Or to put it otherwise- YES I am in for getting in another good LB. But after we get in a winger who can take players on and create and score goals + midfielder who can take starting #6 spot from flakey Bissouma.

You're cooking lately, what happened to you?
I'm not against being wrong.

When the Werner loan came in I was expecting the worst this transfer window and was definitely expecting only 1 forward signing. I was wrong. There is a plan being executed and I can understand and get behind it. Sure I'd prefer is to be a club that pays the 250kpw to get Nico Williams but we aren't that club. At least not right now. So I guess I have 2 choices:

1. Get behind the plan that fits the current structure and enjoy my football watching some exciting talent as it develops.

or...

2. Fuck it all off and not give a shit about Spurs and football.

The average of Ange's signings since he took charge is 21.5 years old. All whilst getting rid of the aging players that made up the squad and swallowed up wages. Brought in by the previous dinosaurs.

Average age of Mourinho’s first team signings when he took charge was 26.5.

Average age of Conte's first team signings when he took charge was 26.

But yeah, no change in strategy at all, I guess.

We haven’t switched strategies though mate. I just don’t see why people keep peddling this narrative.

Since ENIC took over the club we have always by and large operated a buy young talent policy and hope they develop into top players policy.

Yes we may be paying slightly more for players now, but that is more to do with general inflation than a change in strategy. We’re in a world now where Bournemouth are buying 50 million strikers ffs.

Of course I hope I’m wrong, but I just can’t see what evidence suggests to people that we are going to be competing with City and other European powerhouse in the market in the near future for top players that will help us to genuinely challenge.

Interesting point. So how did we reach the world in which Bournemouth spent 50m on a striker? Is it the same world where we handed them 65m for a striker?

It's obvious our business is done in terms of bringing in more forwards or midfielders so the next logical move is backup LB/LCB and keeper.

2 things can be true.

1. People have claimed Zinchenko and Jesus to be ambitious and our model is very similar to how they built their squad even though fans love to hate us for it now and praise them,

2. When this squad gets to the phase of the cycle when it can really challenge, nobody has any trust Levy to sanction the 100m plus 200kpw wages on the player to push us over the edge. And they have good reason not to trust him to do it because he’s never done it.

But at the end of the day, the wage room has been cleared this summer and the space in the squad is very obviously being prepared for it to reach that phase of the cycle and there is no fucking point perpetually moaning about it not happening in the past or talking down and hating on every signing we make until we get to that point.

It’s most likely next summer when Werner’s loan expires and some veterans in our squad reach decision time in their contract lengths. Can we not just enjoy the ride until we get there? Football is meant to be fun. And if it’s not what’s the fucking point?

Great post.

I don't have any problem with the "buy young" approach!

But IF you choose that path, you need to have one of the strongest scouting departments there is.

And we haven't had that for the last 20 years, so therefor we have failed.
It’s not been the same people all the time with a consistent “buy young” strategy in that period though.

Arnesen gave us Lennon & Dawson

Comolli gave us Kaboul, BAE, Modric* rose Bale

Walker was a “club signing” under Redknapp. Sandro was a considered a top DM prospect.

Baldini bought nobody who fit this criteria (Zeki Fryers maybe?), go check out the average age of the infamous magnificent 7 bought to replace Bale, only Eriksen & Lamela are younger than Bale.

Even with early Poch, it was Dele, Dier, Davies, (I’m not counting Son as a buy young)

This isn’t something we’ve pursued in ages, and if we have bought the odd teenager/youngster (Jack Clarke, Spence), we’ve had managers completely unwilling to play them.

Why is it obvious?
How is it obvious?

Because you think it is?

I mean there have been quotes about "energetic midfielder" but I've never seen a direct quote about looking for LCB/LB nor a GK.

If our transfer activity is done then it's 100% another season of transition, unless we find 2 or 3 players who perform at a very high level for the majority of the season. And that never happens with us for whatever reason.. Encapsulates why we always flatter to deceive.

Yes, so we should take everything journos write as pure gold.

Can you maybe also post me a valid link about us signing Odobert by those "pure gold" journos :) ?

It is pretty obvious that we (nor journalists) have got next to no clue what is going on and we can only discuss what WE THINK should and could be the biggest needs of the squad.

And I personally and subjectively still believe we should look at #6 and high-output-dribbling-winger into the side if we want to take BIG step ahead. Though this window already has been a step forward.

I'd enjoy it a lot more if I was paying a season ticket price that is somewhere around out league position Vs other clubs.

Maybe this should become a worldwide football rule whereby clubs have to alter season ticket prices based on last seasons league position.

I mean, I'm not paying for a season ticket but I wouldn't do that if I couldn't see a plan in place after all the chaotic shit they just put people through since Poch.

But tbh mate I can see a plan and I do enjoy watching the team play football this way so it wouldn't be an easy decision for me. I turned down tickets last year and refused to spend any money on the club... I might be tempted this year though. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't.

Ah right, you want me to phone Daniel and tell him to send you a message confirming what our transfer business is then, righto :harrylol:

You want a valid link from where? from whom? The Club? ENIC? Ange? That's the whole point of journos mate and JPB is a good journo who has close links to the club and if he's putting that out there then it's most probably going to be true but you're right what do I know let's just go off our delusion instead shall we.

Further to this you show me a valid link claiming the contrary seeing as you want evidence can you show me anything which suggests that we are still looking for forwards and midfielders, happy to have my mind changed if so...

Well, or actually world is not just black-and-white... and there are some options inbetween too?

Like for example -
3. Hope for the best possible outcome and support the team passionately, but also acknowledge that you personally feel that the step club took this year is not enough considering context.
